Do your pets have any weird/quirky behaviors?

Asked by Jude (32207points) May 30th, 2011

I have a pooch and a kitty. The 9lbs Chihuahua/Pomeranian loves to eat Dandelion fluff. You know, the white fluffies? If there’s a field of ‘em, he’ll walk through them and chow down.

My cat has a tire fetish. If he sees a tire of any sort (car, bike, lawn mower, wheelbarrow), he’ll go up and rub his face on it. As soon as I open the garage door, he runs in there and starts to rub his face on the wheelbarrow tire.

How about yours?

My black cat is obsessed with chewing on plastic. I have to hide saran wrap or cellophanes from him, because I’m afraid he will choke. Several years ago he found a condom and choked on it, I had to pull it out of his throat. He is excellent at opening doors and cupboards, so everything has to be child-proofed. Not for the kids, just for the cat.

My grey cat eats hair. My hair, specifically. He will find it and swallow it.

My grey and white cat doesn’t like to drink water out of a dish. He uses his paws to drink it, and much prefers to drink out of the faucet. He will sit at the sink and meow for me to turn on the water for him. If I fill the dish, he just turns up his nose.

@ANef_is_Enuf , my cat also uses her paw when she drinks. She like to drink from the running faucet as well.

I have two cats, a big tom and a littler female (the latter is pictured in my avatar).

Our tom is super friendly, always wants to be in your business, and looooves strangers. We had a piano tuner working here once and our kitty was licking his face, and pulling tools from his toolbelt with his teeth. He likes to rough-house: one of his favorite games is to lie down on our tile floor and have us give him a big push – he slides a good ten feet and comes running back for more. He acts more like a dog than a cat.

Our girl is much shyer (but she loves me!) She has this disgusting little length of rope that I’m pretty sure she thinks is her baby. She licks it and carries it around and meows. And this is really odd, but she has been known to lick this one candle we have too. I don’t know why, maybe it tastes good.

@Mariah Cute baby!

Why do you call us pets? I am not a pet! You are a pet!

My dog loves to chew and swallow wood. This can be a problem. Actually, he pretty much eats anything, which has gotten him in trouble a few times. Also, he is a very happy dog. You know how other dogs run while they sleep and bark? Our dog, Mackie, wags his tail in his sleep. He loves for us to sing to him. He has his own song, which my husband wrote, that we sing to him and harmonize on.

I love ya, loli!

My pom licks his feet/paws and then cleans his face and head with them, like a cat does.

He will pester you endlessly until you lift him to a sink counter and let him drink running tap water out of your hand.

We believe he loves to watch TV because he’ll position himself to have full frontal view and if you move him or yourself to where he can’t see then he’ll move back. If we mute the volume, he looks up at us, looks at the screen, looks back at us.

Particular moving music songs knock him right out to sleep.

My cat is 15, she is Siamese. Siamese cats have a bad name for being unfriendly sort of one owner type cats. My cat doesnt fit that bill. She is very friendly. There is this one thing though that can turn her in an instant to be an attack kitty…if you put your hand near her face and move one finger (let alone all five) I think she believes you have just challenged her with that there is no warning and you have just assumed the position to be pummeled by her. She then jumps on your arm like a newly claimed acrocat title bites your hand and kicks your arm with her back feet while her front paws hold on for dear life. So if you ever meet my cat trust me don’t wave at her!

My chocolate lab has an obsession with laser lights she knows the noise they make you cannot trick her she could be in a dead sleep then she hears the noise and is chasing the light like a cat. She also does this thing where she sits and stares at you and wags her tail 90 miles a minute while making some kind of vocal grunting noise.

Mine does that, as well. :)

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@Jude: Poms aren’t dogs. They are their own kind of pet.

Jude's avatar

@Neizvestnaya I agree with you there! Does your boy like to burrow under the covers? I read somewhere that Chihuahuas like to do that. Maybe, Poms do, too?

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@Jude: My Pom doesn’t like to burrow, he’s a sit atop a pillow sort of princely being but our Chi/Min-Pin lurves to burrow under covers, towels, clothes, etc. We call the Chi/Min-Pin “face hugger alien”.

Our Spaniel sometimes lies in the most contorted positions! Head going one way, legs all jacked around going different directions. I don’t know how she could find it comfortable, but apparently she does!

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@Dutchess_III Does you dog do “frog dog” where it lies facing forward like a sphinx but the back legs are facing out on either side?

Dutchess_III's avatar

No…she’s not done that! She’s just twisted up all different directions, like a pretzel!

Barry has recently started romping around in the bath tub after one of us takes a shower. Our drain has this weird cover on it, so there is usually an inch or two of water left in the tub for about 5 minutes after you get out, and he just eats it up. Not literally, but he enjoys it. Don’t most cats hate water? Also, Barry talks more than any cat I’ve ever met.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@deni You have a COOL cat!

Oh, Barry!

My cat really like playing fetch with tampons.
It is the weirdest thing. He opens the cabinet door, searches for the box and brings them to me when he is feeling particularly sprightly.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Yep, my giant cat, Chewbacca always follows me to the bathroom. He rubs all over my legs and tries to jump up on my lap if I’m sitting on the toilet. When I’m taking a shower, he gets between the liner and curtain and watches me, and occasionally he steps into the very back of the shower and watches me while he twitches his tail in the water. When I’m taking a bath, he drapes himself across the tub ledge and alternates between playing with my bathwater and drinking my bathwater. When I’m toweling off, he jumps up on the toilet lid, stands on his hind legs, puts his front paws on the top of my tummy and butts his head up under my chin. I think he’s a dirty old man stuck in a catsuit.

sometimes my dog will drop our play ball down below her and piss on it. Needless to say that game is over.

My cat is just weird/quirky in general. But in an incredibly adorable way.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Chelste the cat liked to play fetch with a ball made of yarn. While that was a bit odd, it got really weird when she would take the ball and dip it in her water bowl before dropping it at my feet. Then there is the time where I came home from work and found her sitting on the sofa (not lounging in normal cat fashion…sitting on her bum with her back against the sofa back) next to the television remote control. I have a photo of it and still laugh whenever it gets pulled out.

@Dutchess_III LOL! The ‘Frog Dog’. We had one that did that.

Mariah's avatar

@Pied_Pfeffer Oh my gosh, the mental image of your cat sitting like that… did she have a bag of chips, too? I want to see this photo!

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate That is it! Only my cat had better posture. :)
