What should I paint on these blank Russian nesting dolls?
I have a set of blank Russian nesting dolls like these that I bought years ago at a hobby shop and I think I’m going to paint them today.
What do you think I should paint on them? Movie monsters? Historical figures? I welcome your ideas, Fluther.

Knowing you, I think you should paint them as ammunition. The shape seems well suited to it!
Buttplugs.
Or Barbapapa.
Or the last seven Russian presidents.
@augustlan hah! I didn’t even think of that. I may do one of the dolls as a cartridge. I think I’m gonna go for variety here…
@queenie lol, I might just give it a shot.
@rebbel oh god, what on earth are those things?
I like the idea of painting them as jellies.
I want some blank matryoshka…
@ANef_is_Enuf do they have Hobby Lobbies in your area? That’s where I got mine. I also got some cool lightbulb shaped glass containers while I was there. I may do one of them as a jellyfish :D or a Jelly.
I didn’t even know you could get blank ones. I want them, too! No Hobby Lobby, here. :(
Make nesting breasts. lol
Yes we have Hobby Lobby, it’s one of my favorite stores. I spend hours browsing the art supplies. I’ll have to look for them. Thanks.
You should post pics when you’ve painted them, I’d like to see what you come up with.
@rebbel that’s pretty cool… thanks for sharing!
@augustlan sad panda… Hobby Lobby rules.
@Coloma oh lawdy, your mind is in the gutter!
@ANef_is_Enuf oh I will! They used to have these in the unpainted wood stuff section. They may still have them.
Or phallic-like vegetables
Pea
Pearl onion
Fennel bulb
Bok choy
Cucumber
Zucchini
Egg plant
Watermelon
I’m definitely going to do one like a watermelon.
…Okay, here’s what I’m leaning towards at the moment (which is of course, subject to change):
In order from big doll to tiny doll
Dios de la Muertos (sic?) skeleton
Watermelon
One of those crazy Dutch things that @rebbel posted
KatetheGreat (this one will be hard)
Either a human embryo or a pistol cartridge
What the fuck, the tiniest one is missing?! Dammit.
It could be inside one of the six others….
Hahahaha. This just made me laugh a bit too hard.
But as a history buff, I think it’d be HILARIOUS to have them painted as dictators of the past.
I like the idea of animals or foods or plants.
Google image search “dictator nesting dolls.” There are quite a few varieties, apparently!
Well…it’s successful breast reduction right off the bat.
I also found ones that are painted as Confederate generals, great American Presidents, and Russian leaders.
Or maybe he could paint them all as failed Republican women politicians/talking heads like Michelle Bachman, Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter and Christine O’Donnell.
@Kardamom I just puked a little. But I think it’d be really funny if Sarah Palin was the largest one and she was “eating” the other ones. She’d have sort of a saggy face and creepy sharp teeth. It’d make great fun.
Or when he’s done painting them, he could fly over in a helicopter and shoot at them.
Use them as shooting targets.
Paint them as your family members, in caracature.
Don’t forget the self portrait.
…Well, it looks like the largest doll is going to be a jack o lantern monster. I painted a black base coat, and I’m going to paint a grinning jack o lantern atop a mass of vines and leaves.
sperm, egg, fish, monkey, man…
@auntydeb that’s a cool idea. I’ll save that for my third set. Looks like I’m going to Hobby Lobby later…
Stalin -> Khrushchev -> Brezhnev -> Gorbachev -> Yeltsin -> Putin -> Medvedev
(@rebbel pretty much had this idea)
One thing that makes that progression a bit funny is that Medvedev is actually small of stature in real life. (Note this leaves out less memorable ones like Malenkov and Chernenko.)
I think you paint them as a creole band.
@Kayak8 acrylics. And I think it would be rather approrpriate!
@Ladymia69 that would be pretty distinct.
Breasts, waistlines, and hips.
@gailcalled A pair of mirror image lines that depict an hourglass figure, or some other shape at the waist?
I agree. Shadows and shading can be added to create the appearance of a waistline.
I totally want to get some of these now and do a stop-motion animation film with them!!!
@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard – glad you like the ‘evolutionary’ idea! Lots of fun going on here. Parallel lines, from top to bottom of these figures would naturally give the impression of a ‘waistline’. Or simply a darker colour, around the narrowest point. Fun, fun, fun!
They look like an assorted collection of suppositories. Paint animals on there, bearing in mind the size of their arseholes. I’m guessing the big one would be for an elephant…you get the picture.
Oh God, only you would see these as suppositories, @ucme ;-p
yeah well, shit happens ;¬}
I think you should post pictures of each one that you paint in this thread. It’d be super cool!
I will. I didn’t paint one today because I am being exceptionally lazy, but I’ll update this thread as I paint more dolls.
Yay! Can’t wait to see your progress.
Did you ever finish any more of them?
Not yet. :-/
I’ve been focusing on writing lately, but I think I just might paint another one tomorrow!
