Was it disrespectful for the President to play golf on Memorial day?

Asked by Cruiser (40454points) May 31st, 2011

Apparently Nile Gardiner across the pond thought so. He seemed genuinely upset with our President playing golf on Memorial Day for the second time in his presidency.

Mr. Gardiner failed to provide details of our Presidents activities earlier in the day at the Memorial day services at Arlington. Is this just another cheap shot at Obama?

Seriously? No. (After all, the rest of us appear to consider it a day to buy mattresses, white goods, and get sunburns at the beach.) Somehow, I think if he had clad himself in ashes and sackcloth and spent the day self-flagellating, someone would still complain.

I’d say cheap shot, that or Gardiner is extraordinarly ignorant of the fact that most people spend their memorial day weekend lounging around, drinking beer, and eating food off the grill.

Won’t even comment on the halfwits in the comments section.

Not any more than mattress shopping or getting blitzed at a BBQ on the the lake.

First, I did not vote for Obama.

I look at this situation this way: the men and women who gave thier lives, so we could have and keep our freedom, I do not believe would object to President Obama playing golf on their day of recognition. The vast majority only wish they could be there with the president in a round of golf.

If playing golf is upsetting to some people, what about our country as a whole celebrating Memorial Day with cookouts, beer drinking and family fun?

I say look to the heavens and thank God for those men and women who have made our life in America a safe place to live and to quit slamming President Obama.

I don’t think it’s disrespectful at all. As stated, he did pay his respects earlier in the day, what’s wrong with playing a little golf to relax? For most of us, it’s a time for going to the beach or having a cookout, and for some just a day off of work and/or school. Going golfing is no more disrespectful than anything else Americans do on the holiday, especially after he had already paid his respects, which I’m sure many Americans fail to do at all. I feel like it’s just a cheap shot, and criticizing him for playing golf often in the first place is irrelevant (who actually counts the number of times the president goes golfing during his presidency, and why does it matter?) and unnecessary. Some people will just nitpick and try to find any way they can to criticize Obama.

He could have done the trifecta:

Cook some meat on the grill to offend PETA
Golf to piss off whoever he already pissed off
Name a vegetable he hates (same as Bush pere and broccoli) and piss off some farmers
Just for the hell of it, he could have laid a wreath of plastic flowers at the Tomb of the Unknowns, I suppose, in case there was anyone else who was not already offended.

Of course, then he could have danced at the Jefferson Memorial and gotten himself arrested by the U.S. Park Police.

@WasCy, I was sorely tempted to bring that up yesterday. Here is the judge’s ruling regarding the original incident (which this recent incident was a response to) if you’re interested.

I think a distinction which was trying to be made, is that the office of the President of the United States, should pay respect to those for whom the holiday was created to honor. I am not exactly what that should entail. If you weren’t aware that he did pay his respects at some point during the day and thought all he did was play a round of golf that would be inappropriate. This is a question of what should the office of the President be doing to honor those who serve and have served, not of what should the man Obama do. Just my opinion.

The man could find a way to end world hunger and they’d still find something bad to say about it.

Those who hate Obama, those who still call him a kenyan, a socialst, a traitor, etc. would call him disrespectful if he had a barbeque in his garden on that day.

marinelife's avatar

Yes, Americans participated in parades and visited cemeteries, but still had barbecues, etc. Why should the President be any different?

YoBob's avatar

Frankly, I can’t think of a better way to spend a couple of hours on memorial day.

Heck, I’m always up for a good opportunity to do some Obama bashing, but surely somebody can come up with something better than playing golf on Memorial day. Geez!

Barack Obama paid tribute to America’s fallen soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on Monday morning. So he’s entitled to a little relaxation and physical exercise.

The Telegraph is a reactionary rag written for a certain constituency, fearful of change and progressive politics. It can usually be safely ignored.

Well smack his face with a wet fish! If he was fully clothed & didn’t wreck the course then no, it wasn’t disrespectful at all.

WasCy's avatar

I guess we’re agreed, then. It’s okay for the President to have done whatever he wanted after he tossed the wreath, as long as Michelle didn’t wear shorts or a sleeveless top.

mangeons's avatar

But @YoBob, think of the 70 other times he’s played golf while he was president! This is an outrage!

Kardamom's avatar

If he walked on water and parted the Red Sea, people would still criticize him for tracking water into the White House.

ragingloli's avatar

@Kardamom
Nah, they would blast him for VIOLATING the LAWS of physics.

YoBob's avatar

@ragingloli Nah, If former president Bush parted the red sea he would have been blasted in the world wide press as “That idiot who blatantly ignored the laws of physics”. Obama, OTOH, seems to be able to get away with things like conducting military operations on Pakistani soil without prior permission and continued unapologetic bombing of Afghan homes and be generally lauded as a hero for doing so (not that I don’t agree with both of those actions and am quite impressed that the current commander and chief is, in fact, demonstrating some backbone. But just consider how it would have played in the press if Bush had done the same things.). Go figure…

(Obama) haters be hatin’.

ragingloli's avatar

@YoBob
Well, I do not agree with secret military operations in Pakistan or the bombing of Afghan homes.
I also do not agree with him extending the Patriot Act, or not having closed the Gitmo concentration camp yet.

YoBob's avatar

@ragingloli And yet I don’t see significant outrage over these issues in the press. Perhaps a bit of Obama bashing is in order after all… ;)

Only if he yelled “Allah be praised” for his hole in one, and then peed all over the golf course. Other than, I couldn’t care less.

SpatzieLover's avatar

Should he have saved killing Osama for Memorial Day just for better publicity??? These news stories are created for ratings to promote their own agendas.

Blueroses's avatar

No more than I cared when any other president played a sport or got a blowjob. Whatever it takes to unwind, man. I don’t want a stress out commander in chief who never takes a break.

chyna's avatar

No. I went to the cemetery, then hung out at my brother’s pool and barbequed all day and I don’t think I was disrespectful to my parents memory.

Does Ubama get free unlimited mulligans because he is the president?

Garebo's avatar

He loves being President, I suppose I would to; I am sure he does especially when he’s in Hawaii.
