I don’t think this is a joke. I thought fluther keeps our personal ID as it’s written in the privacy policy page:

“We won’t share your info with any third parties without your explicit permission, unless the law or some imminent harm requires it”.

I never told anyone from fluther my personal ID and I never give them any permission about it. Is this has anything to do with law/imminent harm? How on earth this james could know my personal ID? I’m freak out!

The spammer/scammer sent you the message via private message to your public profile here.

Did you report it to the moderators? They’ll block the offending account.

The account is already gone, these people just join to spam the users at random. Because it came through your Fluther account, Fluther didn’t give out your information. I often get funky “let’s fall in love because I can tell you’re a beautiful person” messages.

Your_Majesty's avatar

@zenvelo But I didn’t put my private ID in my public profile.

You might have your Fluther notifications set so that you get an email whenever someone sends you a message, regardless of whether it’s from a legit user or a spammer.

Apparently the spammer sent you a message using your publicly displayed user ID.

koanhead's avatar

What do you mean by “Private ID”? There is nothing in the message you posted that indicates the sender was in possession of any private information about you.

DeanV's avatar

It’s just spam. I can send you the exact same message right now if I really want.

It’s just a fluther feature, private messages. No turning it on or off.

Your_Majesty's avatar

@Brian1946 I never know other people can see our personal ID through our public profile. Can I turn it off?

@koanhead I meant, how could he sent me a message if he didn’t know my private e-mail address.

@dverhey Please don’t! It wasn’t in the spam section,though. I though jellies could only PM each others through fluther.

Awwww….I thought I was the only special one to have recieved that message. I thought I was so special that he only wanted to give me the money…..boo hoo

KateTheGreat's avatar

I got the same message as well. I told Auggie and she pulled out the banhammer!

Your_Majesty's avatar

At least I’m not the only victim here. Glad to know that! I guess the fluther team could handle this matter. I thought someone hacked into my account. Now I feel secure. Thanks everyone!

@Hypocrisy_Central (sigh) He cheated on me! I’m not the first who received this message from him!?...I’m probably the third? fourth? I though we were close enough… I can’t forgive him!.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Hey, @Your_Majesty , he didn’t find me worthy enough to approach…at least you got picked!

WasCy's avatar

Yeah, but I’ve been serious every time I’ve sent those funky messages, @JilltheTooth.

While the rest of you argue about how this golden egg fell into our laps, I’m gonna get a hold of James and get me a cool $16.5 million.

ha! ha! suckahs!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

It’s just a SPAM message and you received notification of it via email. I’ve gotten messages like that before. It’s no big; the mods will ban that user.

Blueroses's avatar

Nobody wants to send me money. Sigh. I only get the lonely soulmate lady and an occasional Coach handbags/cheap Nike shoes offer.

@Your_Majesty In your My Account>Notification Settings here You can turn off the email notifications that send Private messages to your inbox. The spammer never did have your email address.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

I missed out !

No SPAM, not wanted Boo-Hooo LOL

Mariah's avatar

He didn’t get your email. He sent the message through Fluther’s PM system, and Fluther sent you an email notifying you of the message.

Brian1946's avatar

@Your_Majesty

“I never know other people can see our personal ID through our public profile. Can I turn it off?”

All the spammer knew was your publicly-displayed Fluther user name.
Do you have your Notifications set, so that you get an email whenever you get a message from another Fluther member?

Your_Majesty's avatar

@Blueroses and @Brian1946 Thanks now I’ve done that. I should’ve done it earlier,though.

@Blondesjon You should give me a percentage! I told you about this!

SuperMouse's avatar

Whenever someone sends me a personal message on Fluther, I am notified via email at the account I have linked to Fluther. The email notifying me of the personal message contains the body of the message I have received. In other words, it might look like the sender sent the message directly to your email address, but he sent it to you as a message on Fluther and the email you received letting you know you had a message contained the contents of the message. When you signed on to your Fluther account that message should have been waiting for you in your personal messages. I hope this makes sense!

Brian1946's avatar

@SuperMouse

“I hope this makes sense!”

It certainly does to me.

augustlan's avatar

To continue what @SuperMouse said:

However, if we’ve already banned the sender by the time you sign on, the PM will not be here anymore. When we ban someone, all PMs sent by them disappear.

Blueroses's avatar

@augustlan but it doesn’t remove the PM notification in “Messages for you”, leading to a few seconds of “no message letdown” as I search for the thing that isn’t there.

augustlan's avatar

@Blueroses True. It can be a tad confusing, huh?

JilltheTooth's avatar

I weep when that happens. What? They decided they didn’t want to talk to me after all? Was it something I said? Is it because my desk is a mess? Do I really look like a chupacabra after all?

Blueroses's avatar

I’d like it to open a picture of King Neptune eating a can of Spam. Something fun to counter the disappointment that nobody actually loves you.

chyna's avatar

@JilltheTooth I never get those kinds of messages. Just sayin’.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@chyna : That’s cuz they’re afraid of Molly. Zuppy…not so much…

chyna's avatar

Her tongue is deadly.

JilltheTooth's avatar

And so cutely perched in purple flowers…that’s terrifying!

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Thanks @Brian1946 Soda up the nose ! !
