What's a song that relates to any of these books?

Asked by JessK (599points) May 31st, 2011

I have to connect a song to any of this literature (through characters’ actions/personalities or the themes):
Oedipus Rex
Cyrano de Bergerac
Things Fall Apart
All Quiet on the Western Front
Night
Lord of the Flies

…or for example, here are some topics:
Christlike goodness
predetermination
change vs. tradition
masculinity
danger in deception
struggle to maintain faith

You know, I may just end up doing “Tradition” from Fiddler on the Roof, but I’d love to hear your ideas!
They can be from anywhere and any source!

Smells like teen homework.

Indeed, indeed. I’m having a bit of a brain block what with exams just around the corner.

Tom Lerher has a song called Oedipus Rex.

When I saw the first two I thought of “Love Stinks”. And then when I saw your topics I thought “What’s Love Got To Do With It?”.

Maybe David Bowie’s “Changes”.

The Doors The End might work for the Oedipus Rex story. Pay close attention to the lyrics at 5:51 to 6:57

Be Yourself by Graham Nash might work for Cyrano de Bergerac

Leader of the Pack by the Shangrilas might work for Things Fall Apart

Dear Agony by Breaking Benjamin might work for Night

War What’s It Good For? by Edwin Starr might work for All Quiet on the Western Front

Losing My Religion might work for Lord of the Flies

This question was really difficult. Some of the themes, especially in Things Fall Apart and Lord of the Flies were just so many and varied that I had a hard time thinking of any songs that would even cover part of these stories. Hopefully something on this list will work. Hope we get an A!

“Desolation Row” by Bob Dylan. I’m almost certain that anything in that song could be related to anything in any of those books because they are both rather bleak and use shit-tons of symbolism.

Start listening to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Lots of dark stuff in there: Christianity, death, despair, love, revenge, betrayal, retribution…
