Do you have a memorable roadside attraction story to share?
In another thread I got to thinking how, in previous decades, United States roadside attractions were so widespread, and now they are all but gone. I feel like someone should have documented them nationwide every year or something. U.S. folk culture seems to be dying out. In this spirit, has anyone been to any good ones over the years? Or have any good roadside attraction stories?

DON’T READ THIS IF SPIDERS BOTHER YOU! We were headed for the Florida Keys going 4 and 60 because we didn’t have air conditioning in the car. (60MPH and all 4 windows down). A rustic sign made us slow and stop: “Spider Trail”. We found a path through foliage about 10 feet high and lots of huge spider webs. The spiders were also huge and multi-colored. There was no one around to collect fees, no information, just the spiders. Fascinating.
I am LOVING THESE!!!!! Oh I hope people post more!
The only one that jumps to mind is the World’s Largest Teapot.
We took pictures with it on the way back from our honeymoon.
Big Bone Lick State Park was the last place to get me to abandon my planned route. I only wish I had more time to explore there and there were bones just sticking out of the ground! I love places like that!
I haven’t been to any that I can think of off the top of my head, but I’m following this thread because me and one of my best friends are going to write a book about roadside American kitsch and actually travel to a lot of these places, starting with The House on the Rock in August.
@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I was just talking to @Sunny2 in another question about writing a book on these places! I sure wish I had a book of some of the ones that were around in decades past. Are there other places you have on your roster?
@Ladymia69 basically, whatever we can find. She and I have a bond based on an unquenchable thirst for adventure, and we are both pretty impulsive, so we will probably wind up stopping at whatever attraction we can find in our travels.
I really hope you start a blog or something, because I am SO interested in Americana and folk culture. I would love to follow this!
I must also say that great minds think alike. There, I said it.
Do great minds think alike? Or do they think for themselves? 0_0
Just kidding. I’ll let ya know come August when we start our wandering exploits.
Oh I know, but that’s not going to stop me from putting my own spin on the topic. Besides, it’s not like anyone has never written a book about a topic that’s already been done before, right?
Um, like you can’t do another book on the same topic?
Somewhere along Highway 80 near Fairfield, CA, there’s what I think is a life-sized statue of a brachiosaurus.
I think it’s about 50 feet tall at the head.
Bakara Market in Mogadishu. More AKs in one place than you have ever seen. Memorable aroma as well.
