Do you talk to your pets ?
When you decide to take a pet in and raise it for your family there comes a time when you need to talk to the pet. And not only verbal commands for the pets who can “obey”. Do you talk to them frequently ?
I’m curious about this :P about how others see this.

I have five cats and yes, we talk to them all the time.
All day, and he talks back. Sometimes we meow to each other.
I talk to my dogs all the time. Mackie, whom I have had since he was a puppy, really understands a ton of words.
I was at the ff-leash dog park and I was talking to him. A woman who observed this started laughing and said, “Oh, yeah, right, like he understood what you asked him to do.”
When he did what I had asked him to, her jaw dropped. Until then, I didn’t even think it was amazing, because I always talk to him like that.
I always talk to my pets.
Hell, I talk to bugs and random animals I find in the wild.
Of course I talk to them; they’re people too! Even if I didn’t believe the dogs understand me, they seem to enjoy the fact that I’m speaking to them and I love the looks on their faces as it seems they try to figure out my intention… they usually conclude that I mean “food” or “ball”.
The cat will always answer. I just don’t know what he’s saying.
I just talk. I always have pets so others will think I’m talking to another being, but I would be talking anyway…
They are part of the family. Of course we talk to them. Now, Molly thinks her name is “stupid,” but that’s my husbands fault. she considers it a term of endearment.
And Axel will also respond to ass hole.
It’d be pretty rude of me not to talk to her since she talks to me frequently.
It’s my wife that I don’t talk to.
Yes, usually in sign language.
Yup, my cats meow back to me when I talk all the time

Yep, all the time! My pets are like my kids, they just don’t understand “human”. But they understand my tone of voice and snuggle up to me when I talk to them sweetly.
yes my little dog understands me, and gives me hugs and kisses. she is my little girl. i think of her as one of my children.
Of course! They’re generally good listeners unless I’m trying to give an actual command. My cat of twenty years died yesterday (we had him euthanized following weeks of declining health), and one of the first signs of his illness was his sudden quietness. He was a Siamese “mix” and had that conversational tone that is common to the breed. We would carry on for hours in our communication. May he rest in peace.
I talk to everything. My dog. My cat. Myself. My bed. The walls. My Elmo Pillow. =]
when the world is cold to you, your pets love you no matter what.
I definitely talk to my pets. We have entire conversations.
Oh, definitely. My cat promotes being talked to, he’s such a vocal little fluff..
Of course. Are there people who don’t talk to their pets? I think they’d be the weird ones.
I always talk to my cats. And no, it’s not always in my “I’m talking to something cute voice”, though it often is… ^_^
I do.
I sing to them too. They are the only ones who will stick around when I do that.:)
I talk to them. I love talking to my betta fish.
All the time. They know their names, and when I’m scolding them because they’re trying to get outside or are clawing the furniture.
Yes. I say “Get the f*&k off my chair.”

It’s just me, a dog (sometimes two) and a tortoise in my home. I often talk to myself them.
Of. course. How rude not to. Whenever I go somewhere new and the people happen to have pets, I always allow the animal to greet me and I reciprocate. Our conversations are not really that deep, though. It’s mostly a lot “oh, you’re a bootfuul kitteh”, or “I wuv my kitty, kitty”. That or, “don’t do that Mushroom”. (He’s the only naughty one.)
MIlo here; When Gail has behaved reasonable well, I will talk to her briefly. Of course I have to use short and simple words.
All the time and they talk back (in their own way). One even argues with me if he doesn’t agree with me.
Raises an eyebrow@Milo. Be careful not to offend the hand that feeds you Milo!
My boys are working dogs and we depend on a variety of communication methods. I talk, use hand signals, and watch their body language so frequently that it is effortless at this point. When in public, I also wear a bluetooth earpiece so folks are no longer curious when I talk to myself.
I have two cats at my mom’s house, and I talk to them frequently, whether it’s telling them they’re cute or telling them to get off the table, etc.
I have a guinea pig who lives in my room here as well, though usually when I talk to him, I’m saying “Shut up, I’ll bring you more water in a second.” :P
Ofcourse. I have 2 dogs, a black Lab and a black Pit Bull and I talk to them all the time.
Yes, I talk to my cats. Of course, they ignore me completely, but I do make the attempt.
Talk, sing, make up songs for, we have a LOT of communication.
Infact, I am sad right now, my cat Marley is at the vets tonight for a mysterious fever and weight loss this month. I am waiting for all the blood tests to come back tomorrow. He is fully vaccinated, leukemia negative and this whole illness is a mystery.
He has lost a ½ lb. of weight in the last 6 weeks, no energy, his usual hearty appetite is gone. I am afraid he might have cancer.
Send Kitten Marley well wishes! :-(
I have 2 dogs and 1 cat and I talk to them all the time. The dogs act like they understand most of what I say but of course the cat pretty much ignores me except for when she wants ether food or attention.
I have 5 dogs. I do talk to them all the time. They understand a few words, but most of all the tone is what does it for them. But what amazes me is how they communicate with me without words: body language, certain looks, scratching the door, you name it. It’s hard to explain but there is so much communication going on all the time… it’s really remarkable.
@Coloma – Sending all my bestest kitty love your way for Mr. Marley!
I talk to my dog a lot. I once calculated that she has a vovabulary of over 40 words that she understands and can act on.
@downtide Yes, it has been proven they can master great amount of vocabulary. This dog in Austria is famous for that, she knows like 340 words (not 100% sure but something along those lines). The owner piles up some toys in one room and sits in another room — camera rolling in both rooms—, then tells the dog to fetch ball, dog brings ball, then teddy bear, train, rubber ducky, etc. The dog brings all the toys from the pile. Amazing!
Well..Marley is home, $480 of tests, and nothing 100% conclusive.
Blood panels, urnine, xrays.
Sooo..it’s a wait and see situation.
It is either an unknown infection, or, the dry form of FIP ( feline infectious peritonitis ) which, is always fatal within a few months. :-(
The GOOD news is his fever was down this morning, which, would be unusual for FIP related fever that doesn’t respond to antibiotics, usually.
But, the blood tests showed very elevated globulin counts that are conducive to the FIP virus.
He is happy to be home, ate some, went out to lie in the sun, and, also pounced on Mia his girl kitty. :-)
If he doesn’t vastly improve on 2 antibiotics over the next week, well, not looking good.
Hoping!
@Coloma I hope Marley gets well soon.
@Coloma I hope he’s okay. My dog had an unidentified infection a few months ago and I thought I was going to lose her, but a week or two on antibiotics she was fine.
