What do you call type of movies such as Inception, Sucker Punch, and Shutter Island (etc.)?

Asked by nikkiduq (551points) June 3rd, 2011

What do you call these types of movies (or stories) where the plot is frequently changing then tend to be confusing, and the audience are left to analyze or interpret what really happened? Is there a name for it?

Sci-Fi Thrillers?

Inception is often called “The thinking man’s sci-fi”.

@erichw1504 thinking man’s sci fi sounds fitting. :)

Psychological thrillers!
Sci-Fi….Shutter Island? Really? ;¬}

erichw1504's avatar

@ucme You’re right, Shutter Island isn’t really Sci-Fi.

Then let’s call it “thinking-man’s-thriller-movie”. (Oops. I forgot that Shutter Island was on my list.)

I liked Shutter Island, but I seriously saw that ending from a mile away.

Inception – Psychological thriller sci-fi.

Sucker Punch – Psychological action sci-fi.

Shutter Island – Psychological thriller or suspense drama.

I guess it’s next to impossible to group these movies in just one box but the word “Psychological” should be there and much better than “thinking man’s” in my view.

erichw1504's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille well, the ending is kind of left up to the viewer to decide what happend. Did it or did it not fall over?

Some people call them mindfu*k movies.

And when you google a bit you’ll find a lot of movies in this category.

Though imdb will not approve of this category most people I know call them that way.
[ and the name suits them perfect ]

If you wanna see a mindfu*k movie, watch Memento. (Another one of Nolan’s, but no DiCaprio)

@lucillelucillelucille I know, right? In a way it would have been more surprising if Nolan had ended it for sure in real life or a dream. The first time I saw that movie, it was with a friend who’s a big movie buff and we got really drunk beforehand. At the ending credits she loudly said, “UGHHHHHHH, are you shitting me?” in the crowded theater.

@King_Pariah Memento is great. :)

“Psychological thriller” seems like a pretty apt description for all three movies. One thing they all have in common is hints of an unreliable narrator. Actually, in Shutter Island it’s more than a hint. The character is either the victim of a massive conspiracy or full-blown delusional. I love unreliable narrators and the Dicaprio/Scorcese collaboration. For some reason it’s oddly fun to watch Dicaprio slowly lose his shit while speaking with an overdone Boston accent, popping pills, and smoking like a chimney.

I’m trying to think of other movies that might fit in this category. The Fountain, maybe? Or Sunshine? Sunshine doesn’t leave the ending open, but there’s a lot of sci-fi, some mental illness, and lots of dread. Fight Club is probably a psychological thriller, too, I’m thinking.

@Haleth American Psycho could probably fit into this category as well, but The Fountain definitely fits. Sunshine I think would fit into a more suspense category than psychological, but it’s still a very good thinker.

TV Tropes defines them as ‘Mindscrew’ and has a list:

I call them Mindfucks. For lack of better word, not tryna be funny or nothing. If it’s horror, I call it psychological horror.
