Help me find this book?

After seeing noelleptc’s question about looking for a book, I realized I had one I never could find. I never read it, but a friend recommended it to me, and it sounded interesting.

The main character, is a man who was about to commit suicide with a gun, but get’s startled when the personification of Death pops in, and shoots Death instead. And now, because he killed Death, he has to take his place as the Grim Reaper.

It might have been in a trilogy, or even a series. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
