Have you been successful in removing oil from clothing?

Asked by flo (13313points) June 3rd, 2011

It is from permanent press pair of pants. A drop. I have read cornstarch or talcom powder…leave it in for hours and then…, and some others but I just want to hear from experience.

Dawn. “Takes grease out of your way.”

flo's avatar

@Judi That is it? No soaking or anything? By the way it is not fresh, been there for a long long time.

Judi's avatar

@flo ; If anything will work Dawn will. If rubbing it in and rinsing it out doesn’t work, try soaking it overnight in a water dawn solution.

@Judi The websites I read make sound like it is such a difficult thing to do. Thanks.

No, but as a bicyclist I have this problem, too, and am interested to hear the responses.

we use Gojo in my Oil painting classes.

flo's avatar

@Carly Thanks.

I wondering if something in the house can do the job. I need it as soon as possible.

Yes. I used either Greased Lightning, Mean Green, or Resolve. Any of these will cut and remove grease from clothing.

Dish detergent works very well

Look for something with an Orange Juice base.
We use something like that at work (it’s called DeSolve It) and it works amazingly well.

Dawn, or Lestoil.

Carly's avatar

@filmfann why an orange juice base?

filmfann's avatar

@Carly That is what the product I use has. It is remarkable at cutting oil and grease.

what kind of oil? For non-food oils use turpentine, then wash

I pin the item to a bowl with clothespins and slowly pour boiling water over it. My old aunt’s trick from 75 years ago.

Thank you all.
@anartist I have no idea whether is is non-food or not.

I’m curiuous what dawn has the other detergents don’t by the way.

I clicked on everyone Great Answer but when I got to @faye nothing happens, it remains at 2

@flo Thanks for the thought, then!

@flo, other dish detergents may work as well. Back in the olden days when Dawn first came out, it was special for it’s ability to break down grease so it would wash away easier. The commercial etched in my memory was, “Dawn, Takes Grease out of your way.” that was a new concept at the time.

flo's avatar

@faye you’re welcome then! GA works with your last posting though. The previous one, still no.

@Judi Okay, I wonder if the Dawn people were thinking of just for dishes or did they mention other items as well in their commercial? I haven’t seen their commercials for a while.

Re. my 2nd response to @Judi By __The websites I read make sound like it is such a difficult thing to do. Thanks__
I was just saying thank you, it might sound like, “I tried it and it works.” I found something else to wear so I haven’t tried it yet.
