What kind of small, potted plant should I grow?

I want to keep a plant in my college dorm room next year. It’ll have to be small and tolerate a small pot (I can’t picture housing a pot bigger than maybe 6 inches in diameter) and fairly hardy (I have very little control over how much sun it will get or the temperature in my room). What plants might fit this description?

Philodendrons. Or a spider plant. That’s what everyone grew when I lived in the dorms.
Cacti are really interesting IMO
African violets are pretty.:)
Bamboo can be grown without much sunlight.
I’ve had aloe plants that survived a lot of neglect for a long time.
Christmas cactus’ are surprisingly easy to raise and require very little care and you even get flowers under certain circumstances.
Cacti and bamboo both sound awesome, not sure where I’d get one, but I’ll look around! All the other suggestions are good too, thanks guys!
@Mariah I know Whole Foods sells bamboo.
I’ve found little cacti at at my local garden store and also Lowe’s/Home Depot.
Rosemary. Smells great. Plus you can cook with it!
Lavender is easy to grow and will smell amazing.
You might like an Air Fern This should fit all of your requirements and is not exactly a plant. Read and see what you think.
