On average, how much money do you spend on a daily basis?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) June 6th, 2011 from iPhone

Do you tend to spend a small amount of money on little things almost everyday? Do you save up each paycheck and have a shopping spree a few times a month? What things do you find yourself spending the most money on besides bills. Fast food? Things for your home?

I used to go out to eat alot, like 3–4 times a week, and I would always buy little things because I was bored or already out. I bought a lot of clothes just because I wanted something new that I didn’t have. I don’t do that anymore, though, and I notice the money I saved.

Hey! How are you @ItalianPrincess1217?

We spend too much when we have too much money, and next to nothing when we don’t…

I probably spend less than a dollar on the average day. We spend very little money on things other than the essentials. My husband is very good at managing money though so when we feel the need to splurge the funds are almost always there. Our splunges tend to be mostly on entertainment, like a movie or a trip to the zoo.

Depends on the day, if its a day I need to do shopping for food and things for house then where talking alot, some days not a cent. Really depends on the day.

Aside from the household monthly stuff and gasoline, I average about $5.00 a day which is either a delivered lunch or something purchased for us on ebay.

Daily isn’t a good measurement for me since some days I don’t leave the apartment but other days I’ll go out with my boyfriend or go to work. Weekly, I probably spend and average of 100 to 150 dollars, including gas, groceries and date nights. Today, I threw that average way off because I bought a few things I don’t ordinarily buy every week like soap, a movie ticket and cd’s. I also spent more on the cd’s than I usually do because I wanted them right now and didn’t want to wait for an order from amazon.

I spend an average of $10 a day on eating out. I stay out of malls, and don’t buy things for the house. I have a slush fund for clothing purchases (about $600 a year). The longest I have ever gone without spending any money at all, excluding groceries, was 27 days.

@Dutchess_III Hey! I’m good! Extra pregnant but doing ok :) how are you?

Coloma's avatar

I just spend lots of money all at once.

And, I’m on one of the mothers of all rolls.

Have spent about $1000 in the last week on my cat, his critical care issues, a little grocery shopping, and, tomorrow another at least, $300 on my housecall vet for euthanasia of my darling kitty, and the rounds for everyone else.

Another $480-ish helping out my daughter, a $300 tab on some appliance repair that still isn’t right yet!

Good f—ing GOD, I’ll be living in my barn soon.

@Coloma: Sorry to hear about your kitten. This is a good read for that poor kid who so badly wanted a pet, the one who’s mother wouldn’t allow it.

@Neizvestnaya

Yep, sometimes, it’s a storm of stuff. :-?

I always try to save as many as I could and only spend it each week or month (if possible). Most of my consumption goes to natural cosmetic products. If you look better you’ll feel better.

Twenty bucks a day. Beer and smokes lol. I spend more on the weekends, when I have to do grocery shopping. Other than random exceptions, as in, things I need, or things I want, that’s about it. Not including bills.

wundayatta's avatar

breakfast lunch and snack—say 15 to 20 bucks per week day.

That’s just small items. I guess you don’t mean budget for all expenses—like for car, house, school, taxes, etc.

I don’t spend a lot at all, not because I want to save up, but I never feel the need to.
The only thing I buy every day is a 50p chocolate bar, so… I don’t think I spend a lot.
I love buying gifts for my friends/family though, so there’s probably some monthly spending there.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Like @queenie, I spend more money buying stuff for others than for myself. I like to always be on the lookout for things I can gift for different times during the year.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for.

We spend about $4500 a month total, all expenses. Utilities, food, gas, entertainment, everything. That does not include infrequent big purchases like a new car, or a big vacation, or the property taxes we pay at the end of the year.

I rarely spend cash, almost everything is done on a credit card or bills are paid with checks. $40 can last me a month or two in my wallet.

Are you talking about cash out of pocket, bills incurred, or total living expenses including a daily average of housing, food, transportation, clothing, etc.—in other words, a year’s total outlay divided by 365? I don’t think the answers on this thread are all calculated on the same basis. For example, if @SuperMouse spends a dollar a day, either she’s living on $365 a year or she’s calculating very differently from me. A student who is thinking only about buying snacks is probably completely unaware of what it costs someone else to maintain him or her. My answer would have to include everything or it doesn’t make any sense. Where do I draw the line?

Most days I don’t open my purse at all, but fairly often I click “Add to Cart” on Amazon. Even when I’m not making a purchase, I’m incurring water, electricity, gas, etc., bills. When my husband buys groceries, part of what he’s purchasing is for my consumption. I can’t really separate what I spend on myself from what it costs to maintain our household. Do I or don’t I add in the cost of a tissue every time I sneeze?

JLeslie's avatar

@Jeruba I’m like you, that is why I was not sure what to answer. My inclination was to answer what I spend in total, but everyone seemed to answer cash out of pocket for things like lunch?

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Ok, here’s an answer if you’re looking for how people live. Our household of 3 adults runs on $2400. a month and that’s because we have some very nice digs with a swim pool, a/c running almost year round, 4 pets and tasty foods more than just for sustenance. We each have older cars that are paid off, one internet account that 3 pc/laptops share, one Netflix account all 3 can access at once time but with individual choices, an Xbox 360 account we can play Last.fm through, watch Netflix through and car insurance that is basic coverage.

None of us has credit cards. We rarely shop in department stores for clothes, choosing instead to buy “new with/out tags” from ebay and eat out somewhere nice maybe once a month. For each of us, our biggest individual expenses outside the home are when we fill up with gas.

I have a budget for the year which includes routine household expenses; real estate taxes, income taxes, insurance, mortgage, charity; elastic items such as travel, entertainment, and clothes; and occasional large outlays for appliances, capital improvement, household and property maintenance, and emergency funds.

If I divide that by 365 I get a figure of $164.38/day and slightly less in a leap year. I find I know what my yearly income is and approximately what my yearly outlay is.

I have never used shopping as entertainment, amusement or therapy. In fact, I consider shopping for clothes, shoes, and stuff to be a form of torture.

jonsblond's avatar

Shopping spree? what’s that?

The only nonessentials we buy are toys for the kids and beer.

I rarely spend money on junks or other things except necessities. Though when I start spending i cannot stop easy.
And sometimes I just feel like spending so I just act to my impulse ^^
