How many topics do you think you add to questions on average?

Asked by wundayatta (58741points) June 7th, 2011

I feel like I should add at least five or six topics, and I sometimes add even more. I like to give people a variety of ways to end up at my question. Sometimes, however, I have seen people give only three topics, and perhaps others have provided even fewer.

How many topics do you place on a question on average? What is your thinking about putting topics on your question, both in terms of how many and in deciding which topics to put there? Do you use new topics that aren’t on the list? Are there topics that you put on almost every question you ask (for me “human behavior” is such a topic)?Do you see topics as useful or just a nasty chore?

Four. That’s just a guess, but it feels right. I think I am for about four. Sometimes just one. I have a really difficult time thinking of topics. Sometimes I use new topics, but rarely. Every now and then I through in a silly one.

I always add as many as I can so it can reach a wide audience. I’d say between 7 and 15.

I wonder what question has the most topics tied to it?

I usually add 2 or 3 topics, rarely more than that. I like to put more effort into the title and details of the question, then stick with the main subject as a topic.

I put 4 to 6 topics on an average.
There isn’t any topic that always occurs in my every question.
I have felt the need to add new topics to many of my questions.
I basically think which concepts, terms and subjects are relevant to the current question and thus come up with the topics.
I feel adding relevant topics to your question is necessary and a good habit as some key words that are very closely related to your question may not figure in the main question statement. The clearer and deeper you describe your question and the more the relevant topics you add, the better response you get and thus the better you fluther!

I usually add about 4 or 5. Whichever suits your best thinking.

I think at least 4 is good. If I see a questions with less, I try to add 1 or 2 if I can think of some, sometimes remove topics that don’t add anything to a search.

I am a topic editor.

6–7 I don’t add to many.

Topics only gets more readers not so many replies.

@JLeslie A topic editor? I didn’t know there was such. What are your responsibilities? Can I just add one topic and then you’ll come along and fill in the rest?

JLeslie's avatar

@wundayatta If we catch it we will. But, the author of the question is usually the best person to write the topics. We try to add whatever topics will help someone find your question on a search. There are some rules we try to adhere to, like we prefer plural words to singular where appropriate, like using relationships, rather than relationship, everything lower case, unless it is a proper noun, stuff like that. Many times people forget to use broader topics like science, technology, relationships, psychology, and go very specific like marriage, girlfriend, ipad, etc. It’s good to have both.

I put some keywords from the details in it, usually four to six of them.
And sometimes one funny (un)related one to check if you’re still paying attention.

erichw1504's avatar

About 2,451.

YARNLADY's avatar

I rarely ask questions, and when I do, I can’t think of any topics to add.

incendiary_dan's avatar

About four, and my last one would have been more but Fluther got rid of one of them.

downtide's avatar

Probably three or four.

MilkyWay's avatar

Probably 6 or 7.

I used to obsess anout listing every one I could imagine, thinking they were like META keywords to help search engines find questions here. But then on of the poor souls who have to check and file typically used ones asked me to lighten up. Fluther mods would rather add one or two if they think it makes sense than have me flood them with 20 or 30, So now I typically add three to six, I would guess; with the average running around 4 probably.
