Does having a definite vision of "The Mansion" mean that you are hooked on Fluther? Maybe even in spite of yourself?

Asked by josie (30934points) June 7th, 2011

The internet conversation clubs, like Fluther, clearly add a technologically driven, new dimension to social inter-action.

It takes a little getting used to, at least for somebody like me who is more familiar and comfortable with face to face relationships.

What I mean is, it is fun and all, but I resist taking it too seriously.

But I just noticed something that may be significant, and I would like your input.

In a recent thread welcoming a couple of nice Jellies to “The Mansion”, I realized that I actually had a mental image of “The Mansion”, or at least what I hoped it would look like.

It is alot like a place a friend of mine lives in, the guy who eats RGB M&Ms. It has all these guest rooms, like a hotel, each uniquely decorated, and this fabulous party room with a bandstand for local rock bands, and a full bar and expansive grounds with great landscaping. My Fluther mansion is bigger, and a little more gothic in design, but…

I can just SEE IT! I can mentally walk through it!

Am I hooked?

You are, but that is very much what the mansion looks like.

I’m confused. You have a room in the mansion @josie. You don’t know what it looks like? Are you blind behind those shades?

Welcome to the club.

What a funny question @josie. It never even occurred to me to think it odd that I mentally outfitted my ground floor corner suite with a cool-ass steampunk theme or that my outside door leads directly to the natural hot springs path.

I don’t know if the mansion existed at the time I became eligible for it. So I really don’t have much of a picture of it. Besides which, I really don’t even like the idea. It’s too indicative of class and hierarchy for me. I guess I think of the Mansion as being something like the Dakota on 72nd street in NYC. Even when I was eligible for it, they didn’t let me in. Not that I would have gone in. I hate hotels.

@wundayatta Every time I go to NYC I ride the subway to 72nd street and go to the Dakota. People are always walking up to stop and see where John Lennon got shot. They get out of cabs, or the subway, or walk up, but they always show up and linger for a moment at the carriage entrance.
Me too I suppose. My mom loved the Beatles.
And interestingly, I think The Mansion sort of looks like The Dakota.

Ohh no… I’ll have to be cynical if it’s about “The Mansion” (no offense, just personal feeling). I think it’s extremely imaginary and I wouldn’t have to ended there to become famous and high-ranking in fluther society.

Extra: I am a queen and from royal blood so I don’t live in “The Mansion” but I live in “The Palace” (of my own imaginary kingdom). I’m already good and I don’t have to be in “The Mansion” to show how good and popular I am.

I’ve been cursed and I’ve given up on reaching “The Mansion” (which I think I don’t have to) anyway. Please just excuse my cynical opinion.

I agree with @wundayatta . “The Mansion” could be used for class and hierarchy purpose (even if it’s not intended to be that way). I like it when there’s no hierarchy at all or if there’s a hierarchy all users should get fair chance to compete and to reach high positions.

I’ll have what the OP’s having.

I think it means you’re the sort of person who would point & applaud when a bird flies past.
All things being equal, that’s not necessarily a bad habit to have ;¬}

Hmm. I never really visualized any specific mansion. Just a very vague mansion, with pointy little towers, all white and standing on a hill, behind a Sun shrouded by morning mist. Don’t ask.

To me, the mansion has always been more of a significant way to conveniently indicate the matter it has been tied to, if you will. Despite all the funny threads about what we would do in there, or zombies invading it, the communal aspect we have here, for what it’s worth to each user, is a lot more important than the event it gave rise to. I guess it might be in how we all look at it. I don’t know if you’re addicted or not, you tell me.

ADMIT YOU HAVE A PROBLEM XD

Maybe?

I don’t have a definite vision of “the mansion”. I rarely visit the mansion.

I’m still hooked to this damn place. :P
