Can anyone help name this type of dog?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) June 10th, 2011

There’s this dog in my condo complex that remind me very much of a stuffed bear. It has brown tight curly hair. That’s all I know about it. I never get a good look at its face.

It’s not a poodle, I don’t think. Any other dogs that have tight curly hair?

EDIT: It’s a fair size, like the size of a full grown lab.

Is it a small dog, like a Bichon Frise:?
Or a larger dog like a Portugese Water Dog or those “doodle” dogs?
Irish Water Spaniel

I don’t know about a bear though…it looks like it just left the beauty parlor….

I was going to day labradoodle as well. Those are really popular dogs these days.

I’d go with the Irish Water Spaniel as well. The combo of tight curly hair and a true brown is fairly rare.

3 votes for labradoodle!

I’d go with labradoodle too so the ayes have it!

It sounds to me like it is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

They look very much like labs, but have a tight, curty coat.

@marinelife I was thinking Curly Coated Retriever, we’re on a similar page.

@marinelife : The Chessies mostly have a wavy coat and are often mistaken for labs…until you meet one. Damn, now I want another Chessie. I really miss those dogs! Too bad their poops are so big. <sigh> I love me a big, brown, stubborn, recalcitrant dog!!!

Most of the possibilities have already been mentioned- one I see missing is the Portuguese water dog, which has increased a lot in popularity since the Obamas got one. They can be groomed in many different ways. It’s probably a Labradoodle, as breeding these mutts for profit (they are not a breed, as the variation in the pictures demonstrates- they do not breed true. They are a mixed-breed) has unfortunately become a profit center for unscrupulous breeders.

The Irish Water Spaniel and curly-coated retriever are quite rare. The IWS has very short hair on its face and tail (it’s called a “rat tail” for that reason.) The curly has a fully-furred tail and shorter hair than the IWS.

Chessies aren’t really curly, more wavy.

Sounds like Labradoodle or Portugese water dog; well, any of the above already mentioned. What colour of brown ..light, coppery, dark?

Airedales are fairly large and have tight curly hair too. But they always have that black “saddle”.

@PluckyDog

The hair color was close to the dog in this picture, however I don’t think it’s an Irish Water Spaniel.

I’m leaning towards Labradoodle or Portuguese Water Dog.

Thanks for all your suggestions!
