I balled my watermellon, now what do I do with all the scraps?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) June 10th, 2011

You know, not had sex with the thing, but made pretty little balls (really they are far from perfectly round) to put back into the carved out watermellon. If you have ever done this you get a ton of scraps and juice left over. A waste really.

So what can I do with those little pieces and all that extra juice? Can I make a sorbet? Or, a cocktail? Just throw it out? Well, I won’t throw it out, I’ll eat it, but something creative might be fun. I’ll have left over canteloupe eventually also.

Mash, put in a glass and drink it.

Make watermellon wine, or use it in your punch bowl

Eat the scraps of fruit and save the juice for a smoothie or a cocktail or just juice.

Put it in a smoothie.

I would make a drink and drink it. You can freeze it too. Do a google search JL and there are lots of tips of what to do with it. However, I was thinking if you freeze it in smaller portions, you could use it for drinks, smoothies, sorbet or whatever later.

My grandma used to cut the rind into small pieces and pickle it in a salt solution to make a kind of Japanese tsukemono. Very tasty. Wish I knew how to make it.

I just eat them up as I’m doing that.

I’ve never balled a watermellon.

@bkcunningham that recipe sounds just like the pickled watermelon rind my grandma used to make. It was yummy!

Mmmmm @wilma. I always loved to can. I don’t have room now. Where I live we have a gigantic community garden and anyone who wants can work in the garden. They donate the food to a church whose members operate a soup kitchen and food pantry. When things settle down, I’m going to work in that garden. I might just pickle some watermelon rind before it is over too. It does sound good.

You can mash up the leftover melon pieces, or put them into the blender to puree it a little bit and then make popsicles, either with those plastic popsicle molds, or you can just put it into those little paper dixie cups that you use in the bathroom, then freeze. Yum!

The thought of melon balls brings me back to parties that my parents used to throw when I was a kid. They’re just so pretty and yummy and that little melon ball tool is awesome.
