When you create a recipe that is super outstanding, do you share it or do you keep it a secret?
While we were growing up, one of our neighbors was German. She made THE most astounding bread. After I grew up and got married, I went to great lengths to find her and ask her for the recipe. She refused to tell me….by this time she’s probably passed on and SO many people around me will never know what I know. Sad.
Anyway, together my husband and I created something SUPER excellent and here it is:
Stuffed Portabella mushrooms ala Rick and Dutchess but mostly Dutchess:
Portabella mushrooms, stems removed.
Put a thin layer of cream cheese in the bottom of the cap.
Put on a layer of diced green onions and green peppers.
Sprinkle with garlic seasoning.
Put on a few sprinkles of Italian blend cheese.
Add slice of tomato.
Smother with Italian cheese.
Grill 15 minutes.
You have never tasted anything like it!
Knowing Fluther, I’m sure ya’ll have recipes very similar, but adding the cream cheese sure gave it another dimension. We served it to my step daughter and her new boyfriend. He was unsure at first because, as we found out later, he doesn’t like mushrooms! However, he actually proclaimed it as the best thing he’d ever tasted and said, please, next time, could he have two!
Yay. : )
PS…you can NOT take this dish to one of JLeslie’s dinner parties! I wonder how it’s going for her…

MMMMM that sounds delicious! We have a graduation party to throw…..after the dogs and burgers are done and the teens are gone I’m going to try this! Thanks for sharing. I’m with you, I share the recipe! Sometimes, somebody tweaks it and it’s even better! Why not be the first to to test the new and maybe improved version? I have a bread recipe handed down for generations that makes 4loaves at a time…I’d share it with if you’d like ;)
Depends. If it’s relatively easy to make, I would share it. However, if it means something to me and I have put my heart into it (not literally) like my Black Forest brownies of Eternal Hatred™, then only the true and the elite in the inner circle can have the recipe.
I would share it. Food can bring people together. If you think of the wonderful times in your life, how often has it involved sharing time, conversation and food with people you love and care about? So, if I could create a fabulous recipe, I would be happy to share the joy.
@Bellatrix That’s how I feel. Plus, when they make it they’ll usually say this is Mom’s / Val’s recipe! So it spreads further than it would otherwise, which is good. : )
Indeed @Dutchess_III. I agree. Not that I have ever created a fantastic recipe. My sister could though. She could open the pantry, pull out random things and turn them into something that had people drooling. Not me. Perhaps if that is the only special thing you feel you have in life, you might be more precious about sharing it though?
I share it if I can re-create it myself, alot of times what I make just comes from throwing things together and I have to make a point of re-doing them a few times to know exactly what I did the first time to know the recipe myself because I never know what is going to come out awesome and I will want to make again. I love creating new recipes all the time but never write any of them down unless I love them. My clam chowder recipe is all in my head and comes out a little different everytime but I know roughly what I will use when I make it and willing to cook with anyone to teach them how.
@creative1 I know exactly what you mean! I made this to-die-for oyster soup once…but I’ve never been able to recreate it!! Man it was good! Fortunately the mushroom one was so super simple it’s impossible to forget. We’re thinking of getting more and making a pineapple pizza kind of thing….tomato sauce, pineapple bits and cheese. Ummmm.
I share. My ground turkey chili is served in a restaurant in Phoenix AZ.
I have a recipe which wasn’t created by me, but is something that has been passed down in my family. It’s a blueberry cobbler which we bake with fresh-picked berries every summer and to answer your question, I would share it as in the food, but I wouldn’t give out the recipe(with family as an exception). I think of it as something unique to a baker where they make something that tends to be less common and people appreciate it more.
Nah, I share recipes with anyone who asks for it.
Once, we had a bake sale at work, and I made a batch of Parmesan Onion Souffle and sold samples of it on crackers for $.25 a piece. For a dollar, they could purchase the recipe. It sold out.
