Major global disaster strikes! Do you want to survive?

Asked by Blueroses (18261points) June 12th, 2011

Suppose a disaster that would wipe out your life as you know it. Yay! no more mortgage, no more credit card debt!

But nothing. No banks, no insurance, no fallbacks.

Would you hope you died in the first wave? Would you want to go on?
Could you go on?

How could you shake off what you know and actually survive? Do you even want to?

What if, everything and everyone you loved was taken out in this disaster? Would you want to live? What would you do?

I would want to go on until my position was inarguably untenable.
Since, given your scenerio, there would be no other options, I would have to give it up.

I would not want to live if I would have to fight to survive in a violent world. So, it depends somewhat on what caused this disaster.

Fuck, as long as there is wood and fish in the river I can live. Honestly, I might be happier if my family went “poof”. I seem to get more grief then pleasure from them.

I am a survivor, I am also a naturalist and would have no problem surviving

incendiary_dan's avatar

Probably not without my friends or family.

cookieman's avatar

I agree with @incendiary_dan.

I was with ya until you said my loved ones would be wiped out. Without them, I might not have the motivation to go on.

incendiary_dan's avatar

@cprevite Yep, and will to survive is the most important aspect of survival.

Hell yes!! Someone has to eat all that food and shoot all the ammo in my basement prep-boxes…might as well be me!

Of course I want to survive. This is the only life I get. I’m not letting it go without a fight.

josie's avatar

@wundayatta The only correct answer.

Even in a scenario like The Road I think the instinct to survive would drive me on.

jonsblond's avatar

@zenvelo I love that movie!

There would be less assholes to deal with, why the hell not.

everephebe's avatar

Yes, I would want to survive.
In some ways, it would be easier for me to survive.

I’m already planning to live forever. I know it hasn’t happened yet, but there’s a first time for everything, isn’t there?

CaptainHarley's avatar

I could stand being wiped out financially and losing everything I own, but I wouldn’t want to continue if I lost my wife or my children or grandchildren. : ((

I am imagining “The Road” and no, I wouldn’t want to be around for that. On one hand it seems so defeatist to say this and I am not a defeatist but without my family, and without some surety that life will get better, I don’t know that I would want to try to survive.

Plucky's avatar

Yes, I would want to (and could) go on. I am positive that the ones who love me would want me to keep living as well. I’d most likely try to find other survivors and help in whatever way I could.

I have to survive! Who else is going to lead all the stragglers? :P

TexasDude's avatar

I plan to.

Sounds like fun, and I like chaos.

As someone fairly dependent on modern medications, I would not fare too well but I would not just lay down and die either. As long as my wife and I are together, we’d hold out as long as we could.

Fuck yeah! Eye of the tiger & all that shite ;¬}

phoebusg's avatar

Yes. Time to re-invent the wheels we constructed, before we forget the clues.

tinyfaery's avatar

Hell, no. In the event of some sort of apocalypse, I hope my wife and I and all our pets go in the beginning. I don’t want to be around a bunch of gun toting, reactive, fearful humans when all hell breaks loose.

Blueroses's avatar

Thank you all for answering. It seems fairly even with a slight edge going to survivors. I don’t know how I would react. On one side, it would be exciting to start over and having to do real things that matter. On the other hand, I don’t know where that motivation would come from.

I think being alone, like an I am Legend scenario would be the worst.
