Can you name a movie that had a sequel that failed or should have failed?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) June 13th, 2011

I will use Smokey and the Bandit as an example. The original movie made me laugh beyond belief. The sequels, II and III, never made a hit and apparently the movies lost money. Question: can you name a movie that had a sequel that failed? Also, is there a sequel that was much better than the original?

Good morning,John :)
All the sequels to Jaws.
I think The Godfather 2 was better than the first one.

2010: The Year We Make Contact, not a good as 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was a major disappointment, IMO. I haven’t seen any of the others produced after that one.

They all failed except for: terminator 2, tremmors 2, and that’s about it.

The one that disappointed me the most of all was the matrix. I always go in to a sequel knowing what I’m in for, I know there is a 99.9999% chance that it will not be as good as the original.

The matrix sequel was just a turd, a big, steaming, mal-formed, noctious and malignant turd. The way they left the story in the first one, made it almost inevitable to disappoint. They set Neo up as some kind of demi-god, and impressed you with the graphics just enough to make you believe a sequel could work. I watched the first 2 minutes of the movie, until Neo fought 2 agents. He should have been able to anihilate them, he is the new chosen one, instead, he says “hmmm upgrades”. As soon as I heard Neo say that, I thought “crap, they are going to butcher the story”.

Poison, Tremors II, was that film about the big worms that lived underground? If so, I did not know it had a sequel. jp

Neverending Story 2 totally blew.

There are very few sequels I’ve seen which didn’t suck in comparison to the first one. Two that come straight to mind are the Matrix sequels and Highlander.

The best sequels I’ve seen were Terminator 2, Toy Story 2, Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back.

The sequels to Back to the Future were pretty bad. Godfather III was nowhere near the level of I and II.

I liked all the Bourne films. I also like the 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films (but not seen 4 or the new one 5 yet)

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Stinley The most recent POTC is number 4. There is no 5. And I must say, the fourth was also quite good.

The overwhelming majority of sequels pale in comparison to the original movie release. There are only a select few that contradict this trend. Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior being an excellent example.

Failed sequels in my view – Poltergeist 2, Lethal Weapon 2, Predator 2, Ghostbusters 2, Superman 2, Paranormal Activity 2, Conan the Barbarian 2, Home Alone 2, Stakeout 2, Mighty Ducks 2, Fright Night 2, Zorro 2, Sister Act 2

Better than the first one sequel – Alien 2, Dark Knight Returns, The Two Towers, Rocky 2

How about that Porky’s series.

mazingerz88's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Whaaat? You remember Porky’s?! The first one’s always the best for me! : )

Like other little girlies my age I LOVED Grease, Grease 2 however was just dreadful, awful, painful!

Not all sequels are terrible though, I loved Godfather 2, the second Alien film and The Empire Strikes Back. Huggles xx

Butch Cassady and The Sundance Kid 2 ..

Okay… Here goes… Pirates of the Carribean. don’t hurt me

Legally Blonde 2 was awful.

ddude1116's avatar

Wait! And Speed 2.

I love all the Jaws movies. While the first one is an ecxellent suspense thriller, the sequels are nice, retarded fun. They should have probbaly failed though, since they, in no way, do the original justice. Especially not the fourth one. The shark followed the family halfway through the world. Right, okay. Lol.

Personally, I think Terminator 2 was better than the original.

Rocky sequels sucked. So did Rambo sequels, Back To The Future sequels, Batman 3 and 4, Wolverine, Superman sequels, and ALL Transformer movies.
Best sequels? The Road Warrior, Aliens, The Dark Knight, and Empire Strikes Back.

downtide's avatar

@Talkingcamara Twilight doesn’t count. The first one sucked too.

Along with most of the ones mentioned above:

Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights
Speed 2: Cruise Control
Weekend at Bernie’s II
Blues Brothers 2000
Caddyshack II
Rocky V
The Next Karate Kid
Son of the Mask
Basic Instinct 2
Batman & Robin (1997)
Most Disney sequels are horrible.

I’m sure there are many more.

Dirty Dancing Havana Nights was worth it for dreamy Diego Luna. Mmmm
