Why would someone operate more than one guest in a chat room?

I am not too familiar with chat rooms, but I thought I would try to join the action on Ziggy TV. If you run your cursor over the avatars of the users a profile pic will pop up if they have one. Well I noticed that there were about four or five users with the same profile pic. My question is actually a two part’er. One: Am I mistaken about one person operating or posing as several users? Two: If I am not mistaken, why would you do this?

Are there only a set number of available icons? Or, perhaps they were pictures commonly used as icons? There’s not enough information to know why that happened.
On the other hand, there are plenty of reasons why someone might operate multiple chat sockpuppets. Sometimes it’s to create a false sense of importance for themselves. Sometimes it’s for spam – one puppet would say, “Hey, I need something good to read” and the other puppet might say, “Oh, then check out my blog at [link]!”. Sometimes it’s to create controversy, or pretend more people agree with a political position than who really do, so as to inflate the perceived support out there. And even more things that I haven’t thought of, which are probably unique to this individual or group.
Did you notice them talking about anything in particular?
Because it is the Internet, and they can. They can be anyone they want to. That’s why you should not believe what you read on the Internet.
And sometimes there are “ghosts” of people who were in the chat room but left. I have been in a chat room, left, and come back again. There I am, right there, beside myself! No wonder people think I’m nutty…
@laureth the profile pic was of a young man; it wasn’t one of the generic ones made available.
If it was one person…he was talking to himself. Why would he do that and not be a little bit more stealth than that?
@valdasta – The Internet, being a cross section of everyone who has access to it, is full of not-so-bright people as well as the bright.
@laureth Well, I am new to the internet, but I was able to put two and two together…that would make them: “not so bright”. I asked one of his personalities if he were “talking to himself” and he responded, “supposedly”.
@snowberry I don’t think these were “ghosts” because he had several user names and was talking to himself.
He obviously has a lot of spare time.
And if he’s spending that time talking to himself in an Internet chat room he really needs to get a life.
(unless the site is paying him to make the chat rooms appear to be busier than they are so visitors don’t get discouraged with empty chat rooms and leave)
In which case, I could use some spare bucks so sign me up and I’ll guarantee much more creative sublety than this guy seems to be capable of. Or incapable of.
:D
