Rash on 6 year old from a life buoy by a swimming pool. Any ideas how to help treat it?

Asked by cazzie (24516points) June 15th, 2011

My little guy used one of those old fashioned life buoys when he swam in the pool today. He got a rash from it after about 15 minutes. Is this just a friction rash? Could it be an allergic reaction from what it is made out of, or perhaps the concentration of pool chemicals dried on the surface? It is very painful and this mommy is just beside herself with sadness that he´s woken up in pain tonight. I put some first aid cream on it and gave him a non-asprin pain reliever.

I am hoping that he wakes up feeling better in the morning, but if not, perhaps getting some sort of Lamasil or other such mild topical analgisic will help. Suggestions?

Not Lamasil… I can not remember the name of the topical pain reliever….

Lidocane is what I was trying to think of.

I have had board rash many times and treated it with powder for heat rash. Baby powder with an extra ingredient for diaper rash would probably work.

I learned to wear a rash shirt now!

Some infant paracetamol too would help with the discomfort. If you have infant ibuprofen that is an anti inflammatory so might reduce any swelling and redness. Poor lad :-(

The name of the ointment Cazzie was thinking of is called Nupercainal.

It’s also good for the pain of sunburn and I use it for mosquito bites.

His injury is probably from the life buoy he used. Its an abrasion, not a rash. If you have some aloe, this will help with the burning pain and a three-way antibiotic ointment(at Dollar Stores, its cheap)will cure the his injury in no time.

No doctor here, but I have encountered this situation several times in the past and the above treatment worked great. jp

He´s woken up feeling better today. Thanks everyone. I am going to get some Nupercainal for us because I am sure we are going to need it for sunburn and mosquito bites at some stage this holiday and, while he is feeling better now, these things have a way of getting sore and painful at bedtime.

Looks like another hot hot day in NOLA.

We went into the pool again the other day and he got the same rash where his swim shorts touch his thighs. The water felt high in pH so I´m guessing someone overdoses the pool with chlorine. We´re staying out of there. The water is getting so warm now too that it wasn´t even refreshing. Ick.

It might be a reaction with the pool water and the sun.
