A promise ring is a ring that is indicative of a serious promise made to oneself or another. It may be given to a romantic partner to signify a commitment to a monogamous relationship, without a more lasting bond such as marriage. Lovers mostly exchange promise rings to indicate their commitment to the relationship they have. Generally, a girl receives a promise ring from her lover when they know they want to be married, but because of age or circumstance it is not possible at that time. Students sometimes use class rings as a promise ring, although this may be less common than in the past. A friend may bestow a promise ring to another friend to signify their loyalty and/or resolve to remain friends forever.

Purity rings, or chastity rings originated in the United States in the 1990s among Christian affiliated sexual abstinence groups. The rings are sold to adolescents, or to parents so that they may be given to their adolescent children as gifts.

So no, they hold different values but have similar objectives.
Funny, I just bought my daughter (3 of 4) one yesterday… It is something that I’ve done since my oldest on there 16th birthday. It is my way of letting them know that now they are young women, and that they will always be “my little girl”... I do this on there 16th because that is when I allow dating… And when they inevitably get there there hearts broken they will be reminded that there daddy will always be there….. Kinda quirky…. But I started it…. One more to go…
