Do you have any childhood or regional favorite food products that you can't find now?

Asked by Blueroses (18261points) June 15th, 2011

So, I made that meatloaf and it’s good and all, but I was thinking about how great it would be cold on Pepperidge Farm White Sandwich Bread. You know, that fancy stuff that you have to unwrap twice?

It was the only bread my eastern US relatives ever bought and I still remember the taste and texture years later. It occurs to me that I’ve never seen it for sale in my area. Now, of course, I want it more than anything.

Are there any foods you crave that you can’t find at your local store?

I have not found Barrelhead rootbeer since I was a kid. The closest I can come to that these days is Barq’s, but that is OK, it is real good.

It hasn’t totally disappeared, but it’s a dying form of art. My grandma usually makes these special type of dumplings (don’t know what they’re called in English) that has a really chewy and soft dough exterior with some pork and other tasty stuff inside. It’s really greasy and oily, too. Other restaurants have tried to do the same, but none has made it quite well as my grandma.

Sooooo many. Living here in Memphis has been really tough when it comes to food. A few things I can drive 30–40 minutes and get, but some things not at all.

Goya frozen foods. I have to drive, not one local supermarket carries it.

Boars Head Pork Roast, is available, I called Boars Head, but no one carries it.

Entemann’s chocolate chip cookies, and cakes.

Arnold rye bread.

Branola bread.

Polly-o riccota (One market just started getting in Haute brand which really is just as good, thank goodness)

Hebrew National deli mustard (I can get Nathan’s mustard about 30 minutes from me which suffices)

Goldenberg’s peanut chews.

Only recently did my Target near me add a grocery department so now I can get medium amber maple syrup within 15 minutes from my house. All the local markets have 2 and 3 brands of dark amber only.

I buy Wheatina in FL and fly it home with me.

Sometimes I fly home with a Too Jay’s Mounds cake from FL, or tri color Italian cakes.

Hell, if I am in a Nashville, I go to Publix and stock up on bread and cookies. Black and whites, almond cookies, mountain bread, multigrain bread.

NY too, I might bring home bagels and cookies.

Celeste frozen pizza (I can get it at the Navy Base 25 minutes away when my parents visit).

There are more, I just can’t think of them now.

@JLeslie I want to try everything that you posted.

JLeslie's avatar

@Jude Listen, some of it can be had in Michigan most likely. I cannot remember when I lived there what I could or could not find. Next time in Florida you must get the mounds cake, it is unbelievable! Meanwhile, not a childhood food exactly…I cannot get Coffee Crisp anywhere in the US, I bring them home every time I am up your way. And, I would guess you can easily get all the maple syrups.

If you ever have a craving, and you’re in Memphis, I could always send you some Coffee Crisp. :)

JLeslie's avatar

Awww thanks :). Whenever I buy them the stores almost always know I am an American stocking up. Seems I am not the only one to do it. I don’t understand why they don’t sell them down here.

Jude's avatar

It’s a shame that they don’t. My g/f lives in Lakeport, Michigan (just outside of Port Huron). Her neighbors are always asking me to pick up some Coffee Crisp for them. That, and Crumpets. :)

JLeslie's avatar

@Jude I think I wrote Nestle once. They make it right? Maybe I’ll see you in MI and we can trade candy then. :). The problem is when I come up there I am always rushed, never see everybody.

I just came back from Cost Plus World Market and they had both Barrelhead Root Beer @Hypocrisy_Central and Coffee Crisp bars @JLeslie.

I don’t know if you have a store near you, but they’re a great source for the hard-to-find items.

No Pepperidge Farm bread though, dang it all.

JLeslie's avatar

I can’t believe Pepperidge farm bread is not sold everywhere? I never would have guessed that. I don’t like their white bread at all. But that is besides the point.

Blueroses's avatar

Yeah @JLeslie I’d probably be disappointed in the bread but it’s got a nostalgia factor.

JLeslie's avatar

@Blueroses Fair enough. We ate Wonderbread. I still buy it sometimes.

Coffee Crisps are on Ebay. I never had one.

Jude's avatar

@Aster You really should try it. :)

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Blueroses Dose that market still sell Tab? LOL LOL

Blueroses's avatar

Hah @Hypocrisy_Central. If it did, the aisles would be overrun with the ladies from the Westchester Tennis Club. I haven’t thought of TAB in years, but apparently it is still being made.

JLeslie's avatar

My mom travels with her Tab. Half Tab half coke with a few cubes of ice. Her favorite drink.

In the UK a Snickers bar used to be called a Marathon Bar… I am convinced that the taste changed when they re-branded it a decade ago… I miss the Marathon bar…

JLeslie's avatar

@crackerjacked Marathon is different from Snickers from what I remember.

crackerjacked's avatar

@JLeslie I still miss the Marathon :(

JLeslie's avatar

No, I am not sure. I thought they were offered at the same time? I could be totally wrong.
