How do I get red wine out of car upholstery?
I was driving and the wine bottle was sitting in the passenger seat. Apparently the cork had not been replaced securely. When I took a sharp turn, the bottle fell and the wine spilled out. Now I have an oddly discolored portion of the grey upholstery.
I mopped some of the liquid up with my khaki sun hat. SoI have to remove the stain from the hat also. Any ideas? (The car smells of a fruity flavor undercut with woodsmoke.)

Haven’t we discussed drinking and driving? :-)
No, no. If anything, I was drinking and sitting…not a crime yet, is it?
Don’t you hate when Milo makes you go out to the car to drink?
White wine! Like dissolves like . . .
@Kayak8: Do I use a rag and elbow grease or just splash it around willy-nilly (similar to how the original stain originated)? And do I need a vintage, or will rot gut work?
@gailcalled I am assuming that the stain is dry when I made my recommendation. Any ole white wine will do and elbow grease is NOT required. While stain is wet, apply white wine followed by a thick paste of baking soda. Leave this on for a bit (spray to keep wet for several hours). Basically, after baking soda dries, you should be able to use your sweeper to pick up the backing soda.
Next car will have wine-colored upholstery.

Yes, the Cabernet interior. lol
What about club soda?
You could take it in to a detail shop for a steam cleaning, but, pricey.
I had a bundle of dyed red sunflowers spill their dye water once on my champagne colored carpeting in my car, it never did come out well. I just covered it up with a new floor mats.
The GOOD thing once a car gets a few years on it, you lose the new car anal factor. haha
I actually PREFER driving an older car, I don’t get upset if a tree branch scrapes it or something spills. Not that I don’t like my car and house clean and nice, most of the time, but…there is something to be said about broken in cars.
@Coloma:
I am way past anal factor. I drove into the handle of a wheelbarrow recently. It punctured the plastic front bumper and made a nice symmetrical round hole.
I use the dust buster to remove mouse droppings and potato chip crumbs from time to time.

Love it! us country girls, we know how to get past the small stuff.
I had to stop the other day because a tree frog was hitching a ride on my mirror on the way up my driveway. haha
@Coloma: A mama bear and two cubs were spotted down the road yesterday.
^ :-D I had a wine dream the other night that there were 5 mountain lions in my pasture and an Elk! lol
Cougars yes, but the wine conjured up the Elk I am certain. haha
Hot water works really well on removing red wine stains. A roommate knocked a bottle over and it got all over a rug I owned. Hot water took it out. Since it’s on a cushion, the ideal way would be using one of those carpet steamers that suck the water back up. If you don’t have access to one, a damp towel/cloth should do the trick.
