Do the privacy settings on facebook ruin the fun for you?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) June 22nd, 2011

I really hate that when I post on another person’s status, and they allow everyone to see their posts, the whole world, even people who are my friends, who are not friends of the original person who wrote the status, can see the post. It is illogical to me that when I post on someone else’s wall, on their thread, my friends see it on their own wall in their news feed. I have gotten to the point where I simply cannot write anything about politics or religion on facebook I think. I find that very frustrating.

Also, if I am part of a group, can everyone in the group now see all of my information that all my friends can? Even if I am not friends with them. Is being in a group like being a friend?

I realize I should never put anything on facebook that I would not put on the front page of the New York Times, even if I think my privacy settng are ok. It is the internet afterall.

What else pisses you off about facebook?

You can customize those settings. It’s tedious, but every time the gang at Lifehacker has the goods on how to shut that down, I go and shut stuff down.

I don’t even show up in a Google search.

I don’t like Facebook because I don’t feel in control of it. I have had friends get odd messages and invitations that I did not intend to send. I am not sure what is going on behind the scenes and I don’t trust it. Can somebody please invent something better?

I don’t like how my chats are now stored in my message window. Creeps me out a little bit. I mean, it’s convenient to have a chat log, I use it for my other IM programs, but it’s not automatically displayed, and it’s not in my PM section in other programs. There should be a place where they get stored, and you have to dig a bit to get to them.

I love facebook. I just set up a new group for a place I used to work and in 3 days we have almost 150 members, and people are so happy to find each other, it really was like a family there, many of us worked there for many years. We are going to plan a reunion of sorts. I am not down on facebook per se, just feel I need to be too careful now. I have met some really interesting people through facebook, but I feel like I can no longer have interesting conversation out on the wall. If they all joined fluther it would be much simpler.

@aprilsimnel I am going to read through that link later today. I hope I can control what I was complaining about in my original post.

I like Facebook. It allows me to keep in touch with friends from home, which is great because let me tell you – living 400km from most of your friends can kinda suck. And it’s fun to see what some Flutherites are like in their “real” lives :)

I hate all the stupid Farmville/Cityville/Peopleville/Stupidville notifications, though.

@Seelix I was able to stop all those dumb notifications forever. I like facebook- I can check on friends and family all over the world.
