Do solid black cats suffer more from extreme hot weather than lighter colored cats?
Not sure how to ask them or find out but it is known that dark colored anything absorb heat more than light colors.

Possibly, but it probably depends much more on thickness and length of coat. Shaving cats is popular in the summer months even though it makes them look demonic to help them deal with the heat.
If they were to spend a lot of time in the sun they might overheat a little more, but in general, I think no. Fur is fur, and I have a Torti point Siamese who is mottled light brownish gray and white with the Siamese dark paws, but, she has a lot of pale orange dapples too, I worry about her getting skin cancer as white animals are more prone to that. Her nose is pale orange and she has a tiny spot I am watching now.
I think if your kitty has plenty of shade and cold water he will be fine, and, cats are warmth mongers anyway, my cat often likes to sleep on the top shelves in my garage even when it is really hot out.
Well, I have two black cats and one calico (lots of white/light brown)...all are short hair. If they all sit in the sun together happens often here as we like to say, “You could fry an egg on ‘em”...the black ones that is.
The black hair definitely absorbs and retains more heat. We have the a/c running, so I know they’re comfy.
Shouldn’t shave animals seeing as it exposes them to the sun’s rays. Cats will be smart and hide from the sun if they need to. I would assume that they do suffer a bit more, but that is an assumption.
Milo here: Being a cat of large brains, I have no trouble keeping both my white and black parts at a comfortable temperature.
It’s simple.
@gailcalled handsome beast there!
Yeah, my dark cat seems to feel hotter than the lighter, after sitting in the sun for so long, but they seem to cope equally well… Presumably the dark cat is just used to it.
We are talking England here though, so maybe I should’ve stopped reading at ‘Extreme’ =P
I have this one semi feral all black cat who was a kitten last summer. It took most of the summer to get to the point to where he would let me get close to him. He had some fight club injuries that looked bad but there was no way to get close enough to look at them so I kept food and water outside for him. He was sort of a project cat for me, to see if I could get him to trust me or not. I discovered that there were other much larger strays gobbling up his food I left for him so I moved the bowl right up on the porch where the dogs are. There is a gate in the porch to separate their part from the other half and I made him a little cat hooch from a box. I think this cat figured out he could use the dogs for cover so the other cats would keep away. I think that became the turning point for him figuring out I had his back.
Long story short this cat follows me around all the time,and he made his visit to the vets and got the shots. When I pull the truck in the drive after work I open the door and there he is with his little black face chirping away and beats a path to the door to go inside. He has an appreciation for a/c and sometimes spends all night in the house. and plays with the dogs when they are outside and in the house. It’s been like 110 in the shade these past 2 weeks so I think he goes under the house to beat the heat. He feels hot when I pick him up if he’s been outside.
