Why do my cats suddenly loathe eachother like a bad can of tuna?

Asked by Ladymia69 (6884points) June 24th, 2011

So, I am sure all of you will be thrilled to know, I got all 3 of the 2-year-old girl cats spayed three days ago. They are all fine, except for one thing…every time they come within a foot of one another, they growl and hiss! These are cats that used to love eachother and lick and clean one another and sleep together happily…I have read that this is pretty common in cat families after one comes home from the vet…perhaps from the “vet smell”...but shouldn’t this go away after a short time??

By the way, I no longer have the pee problem…so far!

Yeah, that’s kinda normal. When I bring my cats home from the vets, they get all hissy and fighty and stuff. I don’t know if it’s a “vet smell” or a lack of normal “them” smell, or if they bring home another cat smell that they picked up from the vet… Anyway, it goes away in a few days. Maybe because they’re already kinda cranky from the fixing, it takes longer. If you have some of that cat pheromone stuff (Feliway), that might help. I think you can also rub a bit of vanilla extract on them, and it’s supposed to be this really strong scent that makes them smell all the same.

Plus, they all just had surgery 3 days ago. They could also be cranky from discomfort, and generally irritable. Three days isn’t that long. I wouldn’t worry unless it becomes like three weeks, and things still aren’t getting back to normal.

It’s normal, it may take a week or so, the ‘vet smell’ and shifts in their scent as their hormones adjust. My female has had issues with my males ( both gone now ) when they have been to the vet and back, hissing and being totally bitchy for days towards them.

I always figured it was just a scent thing because it takes a few days for that “vet” smell to go away.

What the hell is this mysterious “vet” smell???

Having an animal spayed will alter that animal’s smell. This could account for the apparent hostility between them. Give it time and they will be all buddies again.

One of them has discovered a new hobby: singing.
