Is your default cynical?

Asked by _zen_ (7857points) June 25th, 2011

Do you usually see the cynical side of something, even when it’s not there? Is your humour of choice ironic? Do you prefer sarcasm over straight-laced answers, and do you think you’re witty. Does witty = clever?

Are we becoming more cynical as the world becomes more enmeshed in wars and corruption, when every other person is struggling with something; money, a failed relationship, death or loss, war or a combination of them?

Is the age of innocence over and done with, or is this a temporary situation?

Perhaps I see it wrong, or different from you. Elaborate?

I would like to be all happiness, ignorance, and flowers, but I see something more wrong with a person obliviously happy than someone depressingly cynical.

I think cynicism, depression, wit, and jaded feelings are a completely normal reaction to all the shit going on. Think about it: would a person that is aware of all this shit really continue to go on acting like it’s not happening?

Thanks @Blackberry as you have reminded me of the rhetorical question. ~

The world has always been enmeshed in wars, and life is nothing but a struggle-just check out all of those nature shows.
The point being if we get too upset about Nature’s normality, we will waste our precious lives.
The reason AmerIcan Founders discussed liberty is so that at least you could negotiate the obstical course of existence on terms of your choosing.
I certainly enjoy sarcasm as a form social commentary- especially when it comes to the Utopian notion that the government of all things can enslave a people and make them happy.
But cynicism, envy, bitterness and all other negative emotions eventually lead to depression, and that is one of several ways to waste your life. Not that you would do that.

Answer no. The only time I get sort of upset is when people I don’t even know, tell me that I am obligated to work on their behalf. But I generally try to look at that as a problem to be solved, like fixing a flat tire.

No. I counter the voices of extremism, intolerance, hatred and cynicism.

I think as one ages, one tends to be more cynical. There is a reason why the word Pollyanaism ( being optimistic ) came from a young girl. I also do think it’s also a psychological defense mechanism on my part since most of the things I’m cynical about, I’m powerless to change completely.

But I do balance my cynicism with hope and belief in the innate power of human beings to overcome their destructive and hateful ways. And all through that process, I always appreciate the healing power of laughter and wit. I really believe humor has the potential to bring out what is innocent and kind even from the most cynical person there is.

Before engaging in battle, opposing soldiers should take turns watching each other doing stand up comedy. And in the form of funny jokes pour their heart out as to why they hate and is willing to kill and be killed in the coming bloodbath. Maybe, just maybe, they would have a better perspective on who they are going to slaughter after that. Of course this is just a pipe dream. There I go again being cynical.

No, I am exactly the opposite. I see zero advantage in being cynical.

I classify myself as a realist. I try to see things as they are and not through rosy nor dark glasses.

It’s hard to stay upbeat about things when you really understand how uncaring the “world” is. That uncaring attitude propagates wars, turns a blind eye to famine, homelessness etc. It seems like the people in positions of power are really there playing games that effect our lives. Yes, I could join any number of groups and at times, I have. But then you just get labelled as a nut job because you care.

Keep in mind that my country just lobbied successfully to stop asbestos from being labelled a known carcinogen all because one small town in Quebec (Asbestos) mines that crap and sells it to ignorant countries. It’s all about the votes people.

I have been known to have a very sarcastic sense of humour. This was born out of trauma. I have done a lot of work curbing it.

I wear so many masks I think I’ve lost my default… my best guess is that my default is a little 6 year old crying because of his innocence so violently destroyed.

_zen_'s avatar

@King_Pariah We all wear a face, that we hide away forever then we take it out and show ourselves when everyone has gone. Some are satin, some are steel… I have always wished I’d written that Billy Joel classic the Stranger. But though we all wear masks – all of us – those who say WYSIWYG are lying, or a little on the slow side. Either isn’t attractive. But why state that – and how do you feel about it?

Perhaps stupidly, I believe in love and I will always believe in it no matter how many times it hurts me.

Politics and religion—cynicism abides.

Cynics are idealists that have had some rough things happen to them. I have compassion for them because I could easily be one.
