Is it normal to drink every week?
Yesterday my husband had a consult with some surgeons, and on his paperwork he wrote that he drinks “rarely.”
Both surgeons asked how many drinks he has in a week while reading through his papers.
Is it common to drink every week? Do you?

I drink just about every day.

Yes. I drink every week. (With a liver transplant surgeon and an alcohol dependance specialist.)
I have a cocktail each night just before or with dinner.
I might drink once a month. Probably not even. There is a lot of alcoholism in my family, though, so I’m careful.
Maybe the surgeon is assuming (not unreasonably) that many people go out at least one evening of a weekend… I usually have a couple of glasses with dinner and friends every Friday evening. And then, of course, some evenings things get really interesting on Fluther and I have a glass of wine or two whilst watching the site burst into flames….
I usually have a few drinks throughout the week.
It’s pretty normal. (normal doesn’t necessarily mean healthy though). When I was growing up my parents drank every night. I on the other hand drink anywhere between once a week to less than once a month just depending on where I am in my life. If someone buys me a drink, I’ll drink it.
Flunking wouldn’t be the same without a beer and whiskey chaser.
And maybe M-o-o-ore.
@zen I’ll pour for you and you can pour for me, deal?
I think many people go out for a drink at least once a week.
I’m more like 2x a month, with 2 or 3 drinks each time.
I’d say it’s fairly normal, yeah. I usually have a glass or two of wine every Friday afternoon when my hubby’s sister comes over.
I drink two or three times a week and have a couple of glasses of wine each time. In the UK the govt recommendation is 2–3 units a day. Evidence is that a glass of red wine a day is healthy.
It is normal, in fact it is even considered helpful to have a glass of wine once or twice a week, unless you have a mitigating condition.
I used to drink excessively, don’t drink at all now. But when I was 20 I had an extensive physical before going on a trip overseas. The form asked how much I drank, and I put 2–3 drinks per day. That was way low, but I was lying about the extent of my drinking. Turns out most people when asked on a form greatly understate how much they drink, so unless they say “never”, medical professionals figure you drink twice what you write down.
I drink every week. I see nothing wrong with that. But I usually have 3 drinks that night. I don’t drink to get drunk.
@zenvelo that makes sense. Ultimately the first surgeon narrowed it down to “New Years” for my husband, but I just thought the question was odd considering what he had written.
I really didn’t know it was so common to drink weekly. I’m not saying that I think there is anything wrong with it, but I really had no idea.
I know a few people who drink two or three glasses of wine every day. By some measures, this means they are alcoholics. Functioning alcoholics. In France, this is not considered alcoholism. It’s normal for just about everyone.
So I don’t know. I like these people when they are mellowed out by the wine. They make me feel good. They like me more when mellow. I have no idea what that means. Which state is the true state? Sober or tipsy? If they like me tipsy but not sober, does that mean they don’t really like me?
I drink very much, I think. I have never flunked. Maybe a beer and one mixed drink once a week and a glass of wine once or twice a month. It’s not something I really enjoy. I like the taste of wine and beer. I like my margaritas, but one is enough 90% of the time. More and I start to get ill. Part of that I can blame on the lithium. It makes you much more susceptible to alcohol. But part of it has always been me not really liking it all that much. I drink more than one drink, and I get stomach problems (but not headaches).
It’s common, but I’d worry about how heavily a person is drinking rather than how often. A person who has a glass or two of wine several times a week is better off than someone who only drinks on the weekends but gets completely plastered when they do.
Personally, I rarely drink anymore.
I used to drink several times a week, now it is maybe once a month. I like beer, but I don’t like getting too drunk it puts me off my sleep.
I don’t know what constitutes normalcy when it comes to casual drinking, since it can depend on a lot of things, some of which has already been mentioned. (culture, intake VS how many times, someone’s metabolism, and so on)
Some people like to drink often, others not at all. I guess it’s all mostly pretty normal, unless it becomes a problem, but that’s an entire other ballgame.
And one which I find myself in, I drink every single day, and I get tanked every single day. Or rather evening and nights anyways. When you don’t know what a hangover is anymore, it’s probably no longer normal. XD
It’s on the brink of alcoholism. He can easily soothe that with weekly AA meetings.
Almost everyone I know who drinks does it at least once a week. Even my grandfather would have a small amount of whiskey after dinner a couple times a week until the day he died. But as has been said, the amount is a whole other matter. When my father drinks, he has one beer. When my colleagues drink, someone gets carried home.
To be fair, we’re graduate students. It’s not like we have a future.
@pshizzle You think having a couple of drinks per week is on the “brink of alcoholism” and he should go to weekly AA meetings? ROFLMAO
I only drink on weekends & special occasions, can take it or leave it if truth be told.
Yeah, @pshizzle , a bit curious as to what you meant by that.
I’m also curious to know who @pshizzle was talking about.
I drink every week. I go out one or two evenings a week and have 3 beers each time. Occasionally I’ll share a bottle of wine with my partner at home, but we don’t do that very often. I like alcoholic drinks – I’m quite a connoisseur of real ale – but I hate being drunk.
I took it as sarcasm because of just drinking just New Years Eve.
To Hell with “normal”
lol
it varies. day to day, week to week….
A glass with frozen water wrapped in bourbon every now and then.
A glass of wine with dinner, a beer with friends, etc.
FWIW…I used to drink every day and thought that was normal. I think when and how much you drink is more of a defining factor of what is normal or not. Use that as your gauge of what you may or may not think is normal.
I think it can be normal for those that do it. I know many people who drink alcohol every weekend (sometimes they get drunk ..other times not). I also know some people who drink wine with dinner almost nightly. I know some that come home and have a beer.
I do not drink alcohol. I think I’ve had two vodka coolers within the last 14 years. When I was younger, I was drinking a lot though. People loved me drunk because I came completely out of my shell; I was hilarious and fun…I was also usually the last one standing in the morning. As I got older, I found I didn’t need the alcohol (or drugs) to let out my fun side. Lol…there have been times, over the years, when people thought I was drunk ..but I was completely sober.
I don’t drink every week. Like you, I have alcoholism in my family and I think that has had an effect on my use of alcohol. I have a glass or two if I feel like it but I can go for weeks without wanting a drink.
I can go weeks without drinking anything alcoholic. However, if I open a bottle of wine I will finish it in three or four days. When I have to answer that question I say “fewer than one drink per week”.
My lack of alcohol consumption has saved me a lot of brain cells, money and heartache.
For many college students I know, yes, it is. In April-May of this year, I drank every week, sometimes more. I haven’t been doing that lately now that school is out, however.
I have a couple beers most nights. I don’t get drunk every night by any means. I rarely get drunk now a days. I just like how beer tastes, so I drink it responsibly and in moderation.
I drink every night. Am I normal????
I drink a little more than a ½ bottle of light beer almost every day.
The cumulative result of that is a little less than a 6-pack of beer per week.
In my statistically-unfounded opinion, it’s normal to have a drink or two once or twice a week.
Pretty normal, yeah. I don’t drink every week most of the time, but I know a lot of people do. It used to be pretty common to drink every day (cocktail hour).
