Could anti-freeze be used to kill cancer cells?

Asked by rock4ever (1866points) June 25th, 2011

I was wondering. I know anti-freeze can kill a person, but what if it was, chemically altered so that it was only strong enough to kill the cancer cells. You could inject it or whatever and then have the dead cancer cells surgically removed. The remaining dead cells would be taken care of by the immune system. Your thought?

They have a large number of already effective seriously toxic chemicals available for the killing of cancer cells, why bother with anti-freeze?

It would have been done if feasible. I think the poison left in the dead cells would still hurt your kidneys. They are working hard on agents that will target only cancer cells and go easy on the rest of the body.

Kind of like salt, sodium by itself could kill you. Chlorine could kill you. Put together, you chemically alter them to make sodium chloride, better known as salt. I would imagine you could take the harmful ingredients out, or you could add to it. What made you think of antifreeze by the way?

@pshizzle no clue. When I’m only half awake and bored I come up with random ideas.

@Lightlyseared NO just like that!!!!!!!!! :) No justification?

AFAIK, cancerous cells are about as sturdy as regular ones; the trick is to keep the healthy cells from being wiped out along with the rest.

@rock4ever the common things used as antifreeze (methanol, ethylene glycol etc…) aren’t that toxic when compared to the stuff that is actually used to kill cancer cells.

@rock4ever : Just an example. When I had chemo, the pharmacy techs that brought the drugs to the oncology ward wore gloves and masks. The bottles of the various chemo protocols each had a big orange trefoil sticker on them denoting severely nasty toxins, and everyone from the techs to the nurses had extra heavy-duty gloves on, simply to handle the bottles. Then they pumped that stuff into our veins… and some of us came out alive! Amazing!

You could also use a dimmer switch to control the voltage when you put your tongue in a light socket and adjust the current to kill cancer cells. Give it a whirl next time you are taking a bath and post your results..

Ain’t no one putting anti-freeze in DIS ole body! Heh!

@CaptainHarley : You’ve already had worse, I’m sure. Anti-freeze might be a nice vacation by comparison!

@JilltheTooth:L And don’t forget the red dye that was added to ensure that there is no leakage of the chemo drip on your skin. I used to pee pink urine for 24 hrs after each infusion.

i am grateful to be left with only some minor residual heart burn.

@gailcalled : I escaped the “dreaded red stuff” but radiation scrambled my guts nicely, that’s OK cuz the chemo destroyed my short term memory anyway, so…so…crap, I left my…something…somewhere…in the car, maybe?
