Have you ever been an evacuee?
Every day, it seems, the news speaks of areas in the world where an entire region was evacuated for one reason or another.
Just today in St. Louis Mo, 4,000 people in North County were evacuated from their homes because of flooding. Where do they all go? They couldn’t possibly have the time to load up all important possessions, nor have the luxury of storing them in temporary shelter.
I’ve never experienced the hassles of evacuation. Have you? What’s it like?

Yes while on vacation in Hawaii last year. When the tsunami warning came ( 6 AM ) we were staying at a place 10 feet above sea level with a predicted 15 to 18 foot wave. All people were told go to higher ground. Packed everything in the car.
One of the assembly areas was the local baseball field. We bypassed the ball field and went to the shopping mall 12 miles away. Spent the day watching local hula and ukulele schools put on an impromptu show for everyone.
We returned after the wave past, lucky it was only 18 inches instead of 18 feet.
Yes, but I don’t remember it. I was 2 years old when my family evacuted from Miami during Hurricane Andrew.
Yes, due to the wildfires in Southern CA in 2007. We were told we had to go by a sheriff’s deputy that came down the driveway and told us we had ½ hour to get out. We had to leave the goats behind, and my husband fell through the roof of our attic trying to catch one of our cats (luckily he just hurt one of his hands.) We stayed at my sister’s house along with my other sister who was evacuated- we had 5 adults, 3 kids, 5 or 6 dogs and a few cats in one small house!
The news was sketchy; we had no idea if our home was still standing, if Animal Control had rescued the goats, etc. It was several days before we could go home- as it turned out the fires had gotten about ½ mile from the house. The goats were at a local animal rescue facility and were OK.
