Can write protection be removed from a cassette tape?

Asked by Vortico (3143points) June 27th, 2011

I have tons of old cassette tapes laying around, and I had the idea of converting them into writeable tapes for car mixes and other purposes. Could a mechanical modification fix this, or are the tapes simply not designed for it?

There will be little square holes on each end of the top of the tape. Just put a bit of sticky tape over them and you will be able to record on them.

Sure. Look on the top of the cassette. See that hole where it looks like a tab was broken off? Cover that with scotch tape.

Wow, it couldn’t be easier! That worked perfectly.

Now onto destroying old music.

I also found that you can modify the tape recorder by taping up the tab in the device itself instead of each cassette tape. This makes it easier to mass produce tapes for whatever reason.
