Don’t get the Beats and don’t get the Skullcandies. The Beats are ridiculously overpriced and I just haven’t had good luck with Skullcandy durability or sound quality.
I’m not a Bose fan unless you can get them under $50, but I have a pair of SRH440s that are just awesome, especially if you ever plan on recording or mixing music.
Those Sennheisers are nice as well, but for your money you probably won’t hear all that much of a difference between them and the HD280s.
I agree with @dverhey, stay away from Skullcandy (for the same reasons too).
Out of your list, I’d pick the Sennheiser HD598. A very nice open back set. The HD280’s that @dverhey linked are great too (I prefer these for the closed back) – I have been considering them myself. I have never tried the Shure brand, so I can’t say much about it.
One thing to look at is what you want out of the earphones – noise cancellation, noise isollation, weight, etc. And, how much you are willing to pay.
Example of preference/need:
Open headphones do not isolate you from outside noise, but are great if you need to remain aware of your surroundings. They are also often better sounding than similarly priced headphones of other types.
Closed headphones have an acoustic seal to provide isolation from outside noise; they also prevent others nearby from hearing your music. Great strides have been made of late and sealed headphones can sound nearly as good as open cans, especially at the higher price points.

I just recently bought these and I’m completely in love with them. The sound quality is amazing and the bass is ridiculous. Its pretty sweet when you can feel your headphones vibrating from the bass :P But at the same time the bass isnt overpowering to the rest of the sound. They also do a really good job of simulating surround sound IMO. Due to the huge cushions they’re mad comfy and block outside sound quite well but the music does leak out so people around can hear your music.
I remember the first day I got these headphones I really had to relisten to almost all my music because I was just like “ohhhh shitt… it sounds so much better….this is what it was supposed to sound like the whole time….wow….” :P
Theyre also quite cheap for how good they are so thats another thing to consider if you’re poor like me :)
Thanks guys! Knowing the difference between closed and open backed headphones really helped. I really like the sennheisers, but I’m gonna have to upgrade to those some other time. For now I went with V-Moda Crossfade LP’s. Thanks for all of your input, it was a difficult decision to make by myself!
@Jeremycw1 I gotta say they are some sexy looking headphones. Im particularly fond of the gunmetal black ones. Based on the specs they sound pretty awesome too.
@Jeremycw1 I had a pair of their in ear Vibes a while ago. Nice headphones, pretty good quality, but awesome warranty.
I think I broke about 4 pairs of their headphones in about 2 years and got them all RMA’d.
