Is it common to have loose bowels or looser than usual from continued working in triple digit air temps?

Asked by woodcutter (16377points) June 29th, 2011

It’s been in the 100’s here for the past 3 weeks ( about 111 today) and I have no choice but to suck it up and work most days. I’m not in direct sunlight all the time, mainly in and out all day. It sucks for everybody here. But I have noticed things are different in the outgo department. I’m drinking enough water. Got sunsceen. It hasn’t really become a problem yet and it’s actually offsetting slow bowels caused by prescription pain meds. Wonder if I’m getting sick. (Or sick of working).

It’s the extra water. It’s probably a good thing. Keep up the water!!

Might be worth making sure you are not losing electrolites too. Perhaps drink some sports drinks?

Yes. Any trauma to the body can upset the digestive tract, and a constant very hot environment is traumatic. Your symptoms are not uncommon. Do your best to cool down when you can. When you get home take a cool shower to be sure and bring down your body temperature. Drink plenty of fluid througout the day, and eat foods that will not sit heavy in your stomach. A banana would be a good snack for the potassium and it is filling without feeling heavy, plus make sure you eat some lunch to keep your stregnth up.

It happens to us every summer. We live where the summers get into the teens. I think part of the going in and out of extreme temperatures might upset the body as it tries to regulate. We go from 80 degrees indoors to 100+ outside, into cars that take a good 10 minutes to come down to cool and then into colder buildings for work. Our guts must hate us.

I’ve been in the US southwest since the early ‘90’s so this isn’t my first rodeo but it seems this time around it’s different. My guts are a confusing read now, being when I felt a fart coming on I used to get a fart and that’s all.. Lately though its anybody’s guess what will happen its got me holding off because it feels like it won’t be a fart. It’s a real crap shoot, no pun intended with what I’m gonna be dealing with. It’s the uncertainty that is killing me.
After the temp reaches a tipping point it becomes really hard to force food down, i just don’t wanna eat much. I’m probably just getting too old for this shit.

Poor @woodcutter. Could it be aging?

JLeslie's avatar

Even though this is common, possibly you have a little bit of a bug, and it will get better in a couple days. You are not taking any antibiotics are you?

@Judi don’t get me started

@JLeslie Nope no antibiotics
