Your Twilight Zone moment; you are alone on the planet, how long before everything goes bad?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) June 30th, 2011

You wake to a Twilight Zone moment. You are alone and everyone else is gone. It is just you and the animals. How long do you believe it would take before things got really bad? At some point the water will not flow from the tap, the power will go out so any food in the supermarket and in fridges all over will start to spoil. No electric, gas pumps don’t work so even if you have your pick of any vehicle you can’t use the gas station. Any animal that didn’t starve will be desperate, and those that escape from zoos, circuses, etc will be more dangerous than dogs packing up and reversing back to the wild. How long before everything that works stop, leaving you to be totally self-sufficient?

This is it – ZERO HOUR!

I’d troll the neighborhood and find a house with a well and septic system. I’d find an SUV, a nearby gas station, a 5–8kW generator and a gun shop. I’d manage to survive quite nicely on canned food for the first 3 months until I figured out how to sustain myself.

If I have ammo, then I will be the only one who’s bad. ;)

Isn’t there a show about this- after humanity is gone all the plants start growing over the buildings and everything? Anyway, I would be totally fucked up if that happened. I have no idea how to forage for food or hunt or whatever people do. I’d probably just get eaten by a rabid dog.

A dream come true! I would fire up a fully loaded box truck full of weapons tools and beer and head down to Mammoth Springs Arkansas and live a peaceful life in the Ozark Mountains. Maybe even learn myself to play the banjo and stomp my foot while I play some Bluegrass!

I think I would enjoy it for the first couple of weeks. Then I would have to start figuring out how to survive, and that would go poorly. Plus, I am a social creature. I would get really lonely. Not quickly, mind you. I need company less than the average human. But there would be no point in living if not for others.

I set out on a quest to find @incendiary_dan. I know he’s out there.

Wow, people keep referencing me in survival scenarios. I feel honored.

I can grow and gather my own food (just found black raspberries and mulberries behind my apartment! Score!). I do it to some extent now, so without a job to go to I’d be doing it to a great extent. Without any other humans around to bug me, if I didn’t go insane from boredom and missing my loved ones, I’d be able to trap more meat than I’d know what to do with. I live near several rivers, have a ton of 5 gallon buckets, and a gravity fed water filtration system; water is not an issue. For those vicious animals who are also smart enough to avoid my traps, I’ve got an AK, a 12 ga, a .22 rifle, and a 9mm pistol (without enough ammo hopefully for a few years), as well as two longbows, a crossbow, and a few machetes.

My only problem would be lack of other humans to talk to, and take care of me if I got seriously hurt. I’d worry about major injuries more than I do now.

I often imagine myself in such a scenario, actually. I’d have fun at first. Going through people’s homes, getting all the stuff I ever wanted from stores, and masturbating in church.

Eventually though, I’d need to smarten up and protect myself from the hazards you’ve described, and that which are quite prominent in the scenarios I myself imagine.

I would arm myself with firearms from a police department. I’m pretty sure I could learn fast enough how to use them. I’d stock up on non perishable foods, or at least stuff that lasts quite a while. As for water, I’d find ways to accumulate and conserve what I can while it’s still serviceable. I’d probably have to go to some extremes later on, by traveling to non populated places, and getting water from creeks and the like. In my town we even have fresh mountain water that people just get with their jugs and jars. It’s right by the highway. I could use that. I’m pretty sure it will supply one little person.

Eventually, I’d get away from cities and towns, as to avoid disease from decomposing corpses and fires. (caused by traffic accidents which would occur when everyone stopped living)

I would however, procure for myself a well functioning vehicle, in order to travel fast and get resources from towns and cities, if needed.

In my fantasies, I always end up locking myself up in a video store, getting drunk and watching movies all day and night. And I probably would do that for a good while. Movies are awesome when you’re lonely. But I couldn’t do it forever.

I’d have my little fortress out there in the wild, that’s for sure. But what would I do when sanity starts to leave me, I denno…I could do quite well for a good while…booze will take care of the rest lol. Fuck medical supplies. :D

@incendiary_dan I’ve got an AK, a 12 ga, a .22 rifle, and a 9mm pistol (without enough ammo hopefully for a few years), as well as two longbows, a crossbow, and a few machetes. Just a few questions on that. I am sure with no one around to top you, you would be able to load up a half ton pickup several times with ammo from numerous gun shops and sporting good stores. At the moment, maybe several years down the road, and you have to resort to the bow, if you miss your game how do you get the arrow back? Do you hope you remember where you missed at and be able to track it down? Do you just stock up on crates and crates of them for when the time comes?

@Symbeline Eventually, I’d get away from cities and towns, as to avoid disease from decomposing corpses and fires. (caused by traffic accidents which would occur when everyone stopped living) You missed a detail, they just vanished, they didn’t die, there were no remains of any type.

@Hypocrisy_Central Oh. Guess I’ll just stay in town and watch movies then. :D

incendiary_dan's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central Well, that’s a great question. The store bought ones are plenty bright on the end, so slightly easier to spot (though still frustrating when they go basically horizontal into tall brush) Otherwise, I’d also stock up on dowels of the right size to make arrows and such, and if it came to it I can make arrows out of straight branches. Even now, I look out for straight branches on trees of good wood types. It’s just damn time consuming to make arrows, or at least decent ones. Making arrows well is, in some ways, harder than making a good bow. And probably more important for accuracy.

Oh yea, and I’ve been learning how to reload different types of ammunition. Should be able to use the shotgun indefinitely. I bet I could find a million rounds of .22 without going too far. They’re everywhere.

When my laptop starts to break down, my t.v. goes kaput, and my Blackberry fizzles, that’s when! HELP!! Lol.
