How is it possible that I'm eating way more than I usually do, but have lost a dress size?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) June 30th, 2011

Also, I have been really slacking on my workouts. I’m not doing less than I usually do, I’ve just been busy with other things. However, I have been eating without a care in the world for the last couple of months… far more than I normally eat. Without really paying attention to what I’m eating, either, when I normally eat a pretty healthy diet.
The only other factors I can think of that may have something to do with it are that 1.) I’m getting a lot more sleep than I was before and 2.) I am eating a lot more meat than I normally do.

What gives?

Don’t get me wrong.. I’m not complaining. I’m just baffled.

Thyroid is working better?

Sleep not only helps you choose better foods all day long, it also causes you to munch less.

Have your meds changed at all? When I came off a med, my water retention went away ;)

Good for you no matter how it’s happening!

@SpatzieLover thyroid is a real possibility. Mine always tends to be on the sluggish side, my doctor has been watching it for years. I went for a long period without health insurance so I, myself, stopped going to get my bloodwork done. Maybe I should have them check it out… that would make a lot of sense.

You could just be eating things that contribute to weight loss.

I know what happened to it. Without changing my diet, I just gained a size! I wish I could give it back to you.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Sunny2 lol, sometimes I swear that is really how it works.

Yogurt, apparently. Read something the other day about how it’s highly correlated with weight loss, probably having something to do with the active cultures. The right types of fats tend to help weight loss, too. And probably fruit, particularly “negative calorie” fruits and veggies.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@incendiary_dan I have heard that there is a link between foods high in calcium and weight loss. Eating yogurt is a regular thing for me, anyhow.

Honestly, I’ve been eating meat a lot. I may have eaten meat or fish once or twice a week for the majority of my adult life, but in the last few months I have been eating some kind of meat, poultry, or fish almost every day.

I always eat a ton of veggies, that is nothing unusual. I don’t eat fruit. (Yes, I know that is weird.)

However, I also started drinking soda again, I have been eating ice cream and other junk foods, too. I really don’t get it. I expected to have gained 10lbs by now… not lose it.

@ANef_is_Enuf Eating a lot of meat is actually pretty good for weight loss. Loren Cordain, author of “The Paleo Diet”, explained something about the thermogenic qualities or something. I forget, but free range meat with a bit of fat is really good for dieting.

Is it a new dress? Dresses in the stores? Vanity sizing has run amok again. It pisses me off.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@JLeslie no. Because people that I know keep commenting on how “great” I look, and they insist that I look thinner. Vanity sizing drives me nuts, too. I noticed the change in sizes because my own clothes were starting to hang funny. Actually, it started because none of my bras would fit properly, I was noticing big pockets of fabric in the cups that shouldn’t be there. lol. Kind of sad.
I haven’t actually weighed myself. But, I don’t know what I weighed before to even make a comparison. Might try it anyhow.
@incendiary_dan I really do wonder if that is somehow a contributing factor. I have never eaten this much meat in my life… I just recently started craving it like crazy.

Atkins diet, Paleo diet, whatever, smile!!

Eating lots of lean meat is not fattening according to South Beach diet that I follow once in a while. If you exercise without changing your present diet, you will lose more weight.

Do you have health insurance now? I don’t want to scare you, but I know that unexplained weight loss is a symptom of some cancers. Please see a doctor if it is at all possible.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Judi, believe me, it has crossed my mind. I tend to always think the worst, so I’m sure it is paranoia… but I will see my doctor.

I was just about to post the same thing @judi did. Hopefully it is just your metabolism has gone into overdrive and you have been very healthy without thinking about it, but best to get it checked. Just in case! In the meantime, unless you are already skinny, keep doing what you are doing!

Tapeworm? :)

Maybe you weren’t eating enough before? Eating can speed up your metabolism. Maybe with your workouts you weren’t getting enough calories and now that you are, you’re dropping weight. And maybe your workouts are finally paying off and you’re just noticing. (My random two cents.)

You just added some more members to the household. They’re amazing sources of fun. My guess is you’re expending more energy.?

Is it possible you are spending less time Fluthering and more time doing what needs to be done?

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe and @worriedguy that definitely could be it. I haven’t been working out like I usually do, but that’s because I’ve been too busy to work out. I wonder if I’m actually getting more of a workout without realizing it.

@ANef_is_Enuf I thought I was fairly active, until I had a niece and nephew stay over for a weekend. I was friggin exhausted.
