Lately I have been listening to some older music, and I have been in particular listening to the Eagles. I never really realized how much stuff they recorded, and a lot of it is really good.
Wish I would have been there the first time.
Anyway…
There is a song (The Last Resort) that has a line…
“Some rich men came and raped the land,
Nobody caught ‘em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus
People bought ‘em”
I think I get the metaphor, but…
a. Are Jesus People a real identifiable group,
OR
b. Is the guy saying, “Jesus! People Bought em!” as if they were so popular they sold out super-fast.

What’s the song title so I can listen to it real quick?
I’m thinking the later, but I just put the Eagles greatest hits on to check.
I would assume that “Jesus People” would be a reference to someone who is religious.
@josie Crap, not on volume one or two.
@Adirondackwannabe . . . It’s on Hotel Califonia.
After listening to it I’m going to go with B. He put a little extra, cynical emphasis on Jesus but not people. It also fits in more with the gist of the song if you go with B.
@Blondesjon I recognized the lyrics in a second, but that cd is at home. Such a lovely place. The man is tiffany twisted. I go with B as well.
‘Jesus People USA is a Christian community in Chicago. ...We number about 500 people who live together at a single address on Chicago’s North Side. We hold our goods and property in a common fund, looking to the model of Christian community depicted in New Testament (Acts 2:44–47, 4:32–35)...’
No, I don’t think that’s not what the song was about, but those are the Jesus People I am familiar with.
There’s a clearly defined pause between “Jesus” & “people” so it’s certainly an exclamation of woe. I just think it’s a pretty shit lyric, just an honest opinion.
Some rich men came and raped the land,
Nobody caught ‘em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus,
people bought ‘em
And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea
Lyrics.
There was a time when Jesus people formed an identifiable subculture.
Jesus People is a new religious movement (NRM being a religious group formed within the last century). They have been around since the early seventies, so it is quite possible that the Eagles was referencing them!
