I want to watch a very serious anime with English dubs. Any suggestions?

What is Witch Hunter Robin?
Perhaps some of these?
Wings of Honneamise, Ninja scroll (warning; very violent, and includes rape, but it is quite serious) Neon Genesis Evangelion or Ghost in the Shell.

It’s about this astronaut who gets into this program, to go out into outer space. Everything is against him, being that the program is basically bullshit, but he gets a little help from his friends. It’s a pretty long movie, and you see him go through a lot of stuff on his journey to space. A lot of personal stuff too, that seemingly has nothing to do with his quest. He’s a prick at times. A big prick. But it’s really a good movie. Very trippy.
Rectangular coins, and an old lady in a street cleaning machine! Doesn’t SOUND serious, but it is.
(I also suggested the Ninja scroll movie, and not the series)
I don’t watch much anime but my husband, who is an anime aficionado, made me watch Death note and I loved it!! It’s very suspenseful and it keeps you intrigued.

Here is a trailer for Death note. It’s pretty self explanatory but it’s pretty much about a guy who finds a notebook titled death note and with it he can kill anybody he wants so long as he has seen their face and writes down there name in the notebook. There’s much more to it but that’s the idea.
Depends what type of anime… I mean what do you like it to be about ?
What sorts of themes do you look for?
How serious is serious? Legend of Galactic Heroes is dead-serious. It’s also very long, never was dubbed, and is next to impossible to get a hold of. Even with the Internet.
Rurouni Kenshin wobbles between light-heartedness and seriousness. Hayate the Combat Butler is largely a gag anime.
Death Note
Code Gaess
Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion
Kenshin/FMA/FMA Brotherhood are all pretty serious but have silly moments in them.
If you have any you like, I suggest using TV Tropes to scope out other ones you like.
@Nullo LGE isn’t that hard to find
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Ghost in the Shell, both the movies and Stand Alone Complex
Deadman Wonderland
Serial Experiments Lain
Eureka Seven
Hellsing
If you want to go with a mostly serious story with humor mixed in:
Rurouni Kenshin
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Full Metal Panic! (just skip Fumoffu!, it focuses on comedy over story for that particular part of the series)
Gosick
Steins;Gate
If you’re looking for a good serious adult one, try Crying Freeman. Please, not the live action version though.
I’ve always love Samuri Jack, three or four Seasons worth are available on Netflix in DVD format.
Death Note, Monster, 20th Century Boys
@morphail 20th Century Boys, good call! I forgot about that one.
Cowboy Bebop.
Pretty serious, great English dubbing, excellent music.

Another vote for Death Note. I can’t really stand anime, but this is an intriguing series.
I’m going with Death Note.
Watch Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni or Umineko No Naku Koro Ni.
