What happened to the forums on XKCD?

They’re still here. Searching “xkcd” in Google still gives a link to the forums, too; they’ve just been removed from the main page. No idea why.

There is, of course, a thread discussing the issue on the forums themselves.

What is this “merge” they are talking about?

Also, is gmalivuk (on that thread) being a dick or just doesn’t realize he’s being obtuse?

I have absolutely no idea. I’d have hoped that thread would be more informative by now, but it seems not.

It seems the xkcd forum link was missing in April 2013.
Today is 1/1–2013.

Today the link is missing, for me.

@Addams The link was originally taken down in order to prevent readers from flooding the forums. This coincided with Randall Munroe going public about his fiancée’s fight with cancer. The link was later reinstated, but went missing again when Randall started his What If? feature. There’s just no room for it in the link box anymore. The forums are still there, though, and a link to them can still be found on the About page.
