Is the new "improved" Yahoo Mail working correctly or should I just switch to Gmail?

Yesterday I got a notice that Yahoo mail was being updated with all kinds of handy features I don’t need.
I have had this account for 14 years and liked the way it worked. I used it for email and my contact list. Simple. Today, I updated to the newest version as Yahoo requested. Messenger turned on and I immediately got 4 messages from “hot, wet girls who totally want to trade pix” My contacts don’t work. I can’t enter new contacts. I can’t find my address categories (now called lists) and I get an “Unexpected error. Please notify customer support if this problem persists.” but they give me no way to contact said “Support”. I have been resisting the Google monster, but is it time for me to dump this dog and move to Gmail? Is the new Yahoo mail working correctly for anyone else here?
I am using XP, Firefox 3.6.18.

Mine added contacts that I had deleted years ago. No “hot young men” though. I’m thinking of ditching mine also. I don’t like all the bells and whistles, don’t need them and won’t use them. I just want an easy email address that I don’t have to think about.
Me too. I don’t need all that crap. I don’t want to message anyone -ever. And I sure don’t want the world to know when I am siting at my computer doing email.
Did your contact list work? Were you able to add a contact without waiting forever (1 minute) until that useless error message popped up?
I will give them one week to figure it all out. If they don’t, I will switch to gmail – even though I think Google is big brother.
I am interested if anyone else is having the same issues or is is just me.
Regardless of whether Hotmail is working properly, you should switch to gmail.
If you’re getting hot, wet girls just for having yahoo mail, why would you ever switch?
On the serious side, I enjoy using gmail. They are always coming up with more innovations. Even though I have problems with google sometimes too, it’s been my home for about 6+ years.
I used to use yahoo messenger religiously until those hot, wet girls and boys made chat unbearable.
I haven’t added contacts. But I agree, I don’t want everyone on my contact list to know when I’m on my computer.
@chyna Can you please try to add a contact? I can’t do it. Maybe the system is broken. i really want to will give them a chance.
@jlelandg @dappled_leaves I just feel Google is getting too far into my shorts. (Not like the “hot, wet girls”.) Of course, it is all Robo-nonsense but there is now a record that I got suggestive messages from Shana, Fuana, and who knows who else, within seconds of opening my mail. I don’t want that there. Aren’t they smart enough to filter out crap like that?
Gmail has the most effective spam filter I have ever seen.
Ok, I just added a contact with no problem and was able to delete a contact with no problem.
If Yahoo has POP you can keep your yahoo account and use Gmail as the front end.
That’s how I keep my old Yahoo address alive. I can send & receive as whatever@yahoo.com, it’s seamless.
@dappled_leaves But I heard that Gmail scans your email and targets ads based upon the content or key words. Supposedly if you mention the word Aruba you will start getting ads for hotels there.
@jaytkay That might be a good compromise. But, ut once again, the google monster will have all my info.
@chyna Thanks for trying it. I am too frustrated to try again tonight. I already tried it 4 times. I will look at it again tomorrow. Maybe it is a local problem.
I haven’t gotten the new Yahoo Mail version, so I can only speak about the one I have now. I’ve had my YM account for over 12 yrs and I love it. What I like about Yahoo Mail that Gmail doesn’t have is that you have an Inbox tab, another tab opens when you open an email, yet another tab if you want to check your Sent mail, etc., thus making it easier to navigate in between tabs.
On Gmail if you’re checking your inbox and open an email, you don’t get to see your inbox until you close the email you just opened, in other words, there are no tabs and you can only check one folder at a time. So, in general terms I prefer YM.
Oddly enough, I have various Gmail accounts just because it makes it easier to use Blogger which is where I have my blogs.
As far as Span goes, for some unknown reason (I have to check my filters) I hardly get any spam mail in either YM or Gmail.
@worriedguy, that’s true, but we already have to accept that they skew our search results toward our location and interests, so we might as well pull up a chair for dear big brother. I detest these manipulations, but the fact is that they make the better product. By a longshot.
There’s a theory that if you hide some text within your signature that speaks of death and gore, they won’t post contextual ads (out of some unexpected sense of decency), but I’ve tried it and it only works for a short period. :P
Switch to Gmail. Gmail is better, and Yahoo has recently switched their terms of service to allow them to scan your emails for advertising purposes just like Google does. At least when Google snoops, they provide you with a superior product in return.
@Porifera I liked that feature in Yahoo too. I’ve had this account for 14 years. It is a very short address with just my initials How cool is that? I don’t want to loose it. Oh well.
I will try it again now.
THEY FIXED IT!!! THE NEW YAHOO MAIL SYSTEM ENTERS CONTACTS PERFECTLY AND IT’S EASY TO ASSIGN THEM TO LISTS!!!
I wonder if “Customer Service” read this post. ;-)
Note to self: Don’t waste time being an early adopter. Let someone else debug it.
@Porifera Or maybe they saw my complaint and acted upon it.
I noticed the Messenger BS is gone too. Great! Although there are now half dozen disappointed, hot chicks with no one to share their pix with.
@Porifera Better, cleaner user interface. More user-friendly. Waaaaaaaaaay more features.
@Aethelflaed Well, a bit of a cleaner interface, yes.
More user-friendly? I fail to see that.
Waaay more features? That’s very vague…Which ones?
@Porifera Do you actually have a gmail account?
@Aethelflaed I do. I have like 5 I think.
1 for work
2 for my students
1 for my makeup stuff and eshopping
1 for emails I get from an ad I place monthly
Why does it seem so awkward to you that I fail to see why Gmail is better?
If you really think is better, you should be able to explain why?
My asking you is so that I can see why you think it is actually better than YM based on real reasons and not an overall subjective idea.
@Porifera Gmail has threaded conversations. Gmail has labels in addition to folders, as well as stars, whereas Yahoo only has folders. Gmail lets you report phishing attacks seperate from spam. Gmail lets you mute and unmute, create an event from that email, add to tasks. Gmail has both priority inbox and archived mail; Yahoo has only one inbox. You can sign in with multiple Google accounts (up to 10) at one time.
Gmail has labs, where users can use the open-source format to create their own features, and share it with other users, so there’s no limit to how many features Gmail could ever have. I personally like Google goggles for preventing drunk emailing, canned responses, Google voice player in mail, Google Docs gadget, add Mark Read, custom keyboard shortcuts, insert images, tons of preview options (maps, email, flickr, youtube, etc), Message Translation, Multiple inboxs, and the best one ever, Undo Send.
It doesn’t seem awkward, I just wanted to make sure you hadn’t looked at it for 3 seconds before deciding it wasn’t as good.
@Aethelflaed Thank you. I see what you mean now. You might be right.
I knew some of those features, some I didn’t know or just don’t need actually.
I stopped receiving email from other accounts into one because it got too confusing and cluttered, so I prefer to access each from their original accounts.
I use stars and labels and love that.
Don’t use the calendar for events much. Don’t use keyboard shortcuts at all.
Insert images? Have to check on that one.
Don’t use message translation, don’t need it.
Never use undo but think it’s great that you can JIC.
My students love the chat boxes as they know when I’m on line and can ask stuff.
I never said it wasn’t good. I just wanted to know in detail why you claimed it was better.
Well, I learned a whole lot more about email services than I expected . Thanks!
@worriedguy For the record, I did not send any hot pics.
I have not used Yahoo or Hotmail for about 9 years. I found they got worse and worse over time. I’ve never used an email programme that got as much spam as those two.
I’ve been using my ISP email with Incredimail (paid for a long time ago) for personal contacts. I use a couple of Gmail accounts for everything else. I love how simple, clean and effective Gmail is. The customization and spam filter are awesome. :)
