Nuvaring scheduling/safety question.

Asked by marmoset (1341points) July 9th, 2011 from iPhone

Last week I removed the previous ring about 24 hrs late. Today I inserted the new ring about 12 hrs late. (Late relative to the expected times on the schedule I’d been on thus far.) Does that delay mean I’m not protected against pregnancy right now and I need to wait a week before having sex without a condom? (As for my period, it is still going now, because it started, as it usually does, a few days after I removed the previous ring.)

My guess and it is only a guess is that you are protected. However, I’m not a doctor and cannot be 100% sure. Give your gynecologist a call on Monday morning. He/she should have the best answer.

I’m getting to this question late, but leaving it in longer was fine. Even though Nuvaring’s FDA approved instructions are for 21 days in and then 7 days out, the ring actually has enough hormones built into it to last for up to 35 days. I have many patients who prefer continuous active use to bypass their periods, and with the ring, it’s super easy. You just just change it out the same day of the month every month.

Inserting a new ring 12 hours late is a little risky.About 4–5 days into the withdrawal week, the ovaries start to “wake up” a little, and if you go longer than 7 before starting your new cycle of active hormone (pill, patch, ring) there’s a real risk of break through ovulation.

I hope it worked out OK for you!
