Voice recognition software?

Asked by ljs22 (1082points) April 29th, 2008

I’d like to know more about voice recognition for my pc laptop (it runs Vista). I don’t have a mic or anything yet. Can anyone explain what it is like to use or give advice on exactly what I should buy? My ideal situation involves my computer sitting in the middle of my kitchen while I pace around and tell a story that magically appears in word with at least some punctuation. I realize I may be dreaming.

Dragon Naturally Speaking works pretty well: http://www.nuance.com/naturallyspeaking/

I agree with soundedfury. I also reccoment getting a wireless headset with a microphone if you want to pass around and dictate. If the mircophone site too far away from you it will easily pick up other sounds and the software will have trouble recognizing the speech.

You could also consider adding a Bluetooth dongle to your pc and then getting a regular Bluetooth headset. Maybe check Dragon’s website first just to ensure there are no compatability issues.
