How to fight job gap stereotypes?

Asked by cletrans2col (2395points) July 10th, 2011

It seems people who have been unemployed for a long time or have mostly worked temp jobs are having an even more difficult time finding work. How do you suggest addressing this, on a resume, cover letter, or general job search?

I’m usually up front with them about it during the interview. People understand that life gets in the way of your plans.

Different life experiences can help you to be better at your job. The path isn’t always direct.

One thing that you can do with temp jobs as list yourself as self-employed and list the companies you temped for as clients.

I just buy my sister a pre-paid cellphone that is only used for the job hunt. She picks up as Vandelay Industries and lies.

In this economic era, gaps like extended unemployment are not uncommon and employers are more inclined to be understanding. The real drawback is from people who are up to date in their work experience are preferred because of the current experience.

I am old and have been self employed most of my adult life. That makes it almost impossible to even get a look in this job market. So yep, I lied on my resume, about my age and instead of saying I was self employed, I made myself an employee of the businesses we owned. I haven’t really applied for anything since I have made the changes but I am hopeful that when I do, it will make a difference.
