I want to be able to fight and win the temptation of eating food when I am not hungry. How can I break this habit?

I suggest that you get healthier foods to graze on. Things like nuts, berries, trail mix, and fruit are really good for grazing material and it will help you.

If weight is an issue, avoid the nuts. They are very low density, high fat foods. Stick to vegies to get the least calories for the volume.

Never buy snack food. Don’t keep it around. Keep apples or tangerines or whatever you like instead.

For me boredom is the worst enemy. Stay occupied, and away from the kitchen. Plan healthy meals 4 times a day and stick to it. Right all your meals down and the calorie count.

What I do is keep high calorie foods out of my house, so if I want to eat that bag of chips or that bowl of ice cream, I have to want it enough to actually go out. Other than that, drinking water of iced tea whenever I have an urge to graze also helps. I’ve been known to chomp on ice cubes if I just need to chew on something crunchy.

You can eat any time and as much as you want, if you stick to fresh vegetables.

When I was keeping a purposely minimum weight then I’d drink water any time I had a hunger outside of my planned meals. Then, I’d go and distract myself. Sometimes I’d exercise and wear myself out to where I just wanted to shower and then sleep. Reading over what I’d already eaten during the day helped too.

JayKay had the best idea. Just don’t buy snack foods. If they’re not in the house, you can’t just run to the kitchen and start grazing. Another strategy is to drink tons of water. It helps keep your stomach filled and your mind away from thinking about grazing. If you do find yourself still wanting to munch, buy celery, it is an amazing vegetable that will allow you to feel like your grazing, but you’ll be taking in practically 0 calories!

Brush your teeth after you eat. If you use a whitening toothpaste it works better the longer it stays on. That give you an incentive to not graze. Brush every time.
