How does one become a veterinary technician?

Asked by heyu1021 (262points) April 29th, 2008 from iPhone

I’m interested in pursuing this career and I’ve seen numerous programs for it. Penn foster has a distant learning class; has anyone used this college? Do I really need an associates degree for this or can I gain experience from working at a vet. So many questions.

I started out working in a vet office off the street. It required mostly that I walk dogs, feed patients, clean cages. The practice I was working at helped me go to school and get an associates degree. I learned alot of backgroud information and gained a lot of skills from school. I will tell you if money is not a problem and you like working with animals, you may enjoy this type of work. Depending on where you are in the country and what type of work you are doing, it’s really hard to make ends meet on your paycheck alone. I worked in research for a few months and made decent money, but I hated the work, so I got out. It all depends. You can start at a vet office and see if you like it then go to school from there. Hope that helps.
