Is it illegal to download some movies from Netflix and copy them on a DVD for your own use or not?
I was told a person could copy movies from the internet. Then I was told it was illegal. Can a person do this legally and how? Thanks a bunch!

It isn’t legal. But you would have to be dumb as dirt to get cuaght.
I would say that if a movie (if you’re referring to a DVD) has copy protection software embedded, it is illegal to copy.
Why would a customer rep at HP tell me I should buy a certain kind of DVD+R so I could download movies from the internet?

Yes, he sold me expensive ones at $30 for 25 disks. Included shipping.
Look..they sell these electronics with a wink and a nod. They know consumers want to copy movies and they make it increasingly easier to do so. At the same time, more sophisticated copy protection is continually developed to stop the practice.
The best way to tell if it’s legal or safe to do is
1. Documentation specifically stating it’s legal to copy movies.
2. Assurance from the company that sold you the equipment/software that they will stand up for you in court if you’re sued for copywrite infringement.
I wouldn’t advise you to do it or not to do it, but I would advise you to proceed at your own risk.
