What's a good "war game" on the Internet?
I’m looking for a fun war game that one can play on the Internet with other members, one that is free and pits you against other players, live, like in a chat room, where you earn and lose points, win and lose. Are there any Internet games like that where I can join as a member?

Yes, it is called an MMORPG. There are various ones online, depending on what genre of stories (fantasy, sci-fi, etc.) you like. Many require money, but some do not.
Starcraft is similar to that (I think) but you have to buy the game first (no monthly cost though).
It also depends are you looking for a first person shooter like Call of Duty or a strategy game similar to Hearts of Iron.
This one is free and is a classic:

It matches you up with other players of similar skill level.
I’m looking for something live online, something that pits you against another player or other players. Combat, fighting, etc.
You might find something you like here.
Something that’s not too complicated either. Lol.
So you want something simple, a war/fighting game that is entirely PVP based, with free registration.
Do you like Risk?
@trickface I think I played the board game before, but I’m looking for some hands on stuff where you go head to head with another player, and it’s really one on one fighting. :)
All great suggestions here. Thanks. But just wondering if there’s a physical fighting game, you know, like street-fighting, or hand to hand fighting martial arts game online live?
I’d like to help, but it sounds like your fighting game would require some power behind it as reasonable graphics are needed (even 1995 ps1 games are hard to put in an online multiplayer environment on a PC).
Most free multiplayer games online are either click based with some management involved, or simple flash games (tower defense games, strategy, puzzle).
I’m pretty stumped as to what I could recommend, though I’m not that big on the free multiplayer scene.
Sounds like you want something like Dynasty Warrior, if I remember the reviews correctly. Not my favorite genre so I can’t tell you much about it. I don’t think it is free however.
@WestRiverrat haha DW is one of my favourite game series! It’s surely not the answer. It’s console based so the OP would need to buy a console and the game from a store. Also it’s not really 1v1 in my eyes, more like your army vs the computer’s army with some enjoyable scripted events. I think they’re looking for more Tekken or Street Fighter stuff :D
I havent played it in years, but I used to love Gunz
Im not sure if it still is, but as far as I can see from the site it is free still as well.
While less of what you’re looking for, gunbound is incredibly fun too. Its slow passed but is essentially worms with tanks and is also free
I just got into World of Tanks. While it can get pretty brutal if you decide to get serious, research some stuff, and get better tanks, but so long as you stick with either one of the starter tanks or those only one tier up, the game is pretty simple. You use the WASD keys to move, the mouse to aim and fire, and you don’t need to get any more complicated unless you want to.
Just be warned that if you get into a Tier 3 or higher tank, things are a bit less casual. It’s one thing to have a pair ofhttp://www.worldoftanks.com/ and an MS-1 try to nail a BT-2 as it speeds by on it’s way to attempt a base capture, but the higher tiers often put you in matches where you have a choice between moving into the crosshairs of a T-29 or staying put and catching a 105mm HE shell through your roof courtesy of the Wespe on the other end of the map. Tier 3 is where the casual players get frustrated while Tier 1 and 2 are where you run into people who just like driving tanks around shooting things, not caring about trying to be the next Rommel or Patton.
A few years ago I used to play Call of Duty 2 on the “tactical” servers. Quite some fun at times, other times really aggravating.
@trickface totally possible I got the name wrong, or saw a bad review.
Team Fortress 2 by Valve is an incredibly fun online team-based battle game that is a great value. It is COMPLETELY FREE, is compatible on Mac and Windows, and offers free updates and online play.
If you like co-op based games, the Left 4 Dead series by Valve has the same qualities of Team Fortress 2, except you fight together as a team of 4 against a zombie apocalypse. It’s quite a cinematic experience. It costs less than $20
Both games also have TONS of servers. You can join a game anywhere, anytime in the world.

I’m looking for something that is not “team played” but more one on one or individual combat, where I’m pitted against another “live” player, not an animated computerized one, online fighting. And we have our own individual avatars, points, etc. Can’t seem to find something like that. :(
@MRSHINYSHOES it’s so frustrating because I know THIS is the game for you! It’s very popular and is built for multiplayer, the best fighting game around, just look at all those features for online play! I really think you’ll love it but it requires a console and the game itself.
Oh and xbox live subscription…. ha. Unless you get it on PS3, if it’s on there.
