If you had to give up either music or books, which would it be?

Asked by Stinley (11525points) July 14th, 2011

Some calamity befalls you (you can make up your own story) and you have to give up either music or books. Which would you choose? Would the decision be easy to make? Why would you not be able to do without the one you chose to keep?

Books, duh lol.

Holy crap.
Maybe books. But could it just be paper books? I mean could I get an e-reader or something like that?
I would keep music in any case

That’s like asking which eye I would give up. I can’t even envision it. I’ll go down fighting if I have to, but I could not make that choice!

Music, I guess. I could always hum or sing. Not reading would be a certain death for me.

Music.

Books. Music is just too important to me.

I could just be a rebel and listen to ebooks…or if that’s not allowed, I can always listen to music with stories in them. Defy the system!

Books. If I am still able to listen to music, then I can hear books on audio. Or is that cheating? If so, I’d give up music.

Books. I love music and couldn’t live without it.

Music. Reading is my method of escape, don’t give me wrong I love music but reading keeps me sane. I could not give it up the feel of paper, the smell and the weight of the text. Call me sad or nerdy I don’t care; I love to read.

Ew, I don’t like the options.
I’d give up books. I just can’t imagine life without music.

Wait, does this include all reading materials, or JUST books?

As much as I love reading and books, I’m going to say books. Because even though movies are not the same thing, you can still get some pretty good renditions of books that have been made into movies. But if you gave up music, you would also have to give up movies (along with the books) because all movies use music. And supposedly we are only giving up one or the other.

And your question used the word book and did not say or specify that we couldn’t read stories (which are the actual contents of books) on on computers, or have those same stories read to us on a DVD or other device.

That is an impossible choice. I just can’t decide.

Wow, this question is like asking whether I would prefer to get mumps or measles. As much as I love books, I would choose to keep music. Listening to music touches me spiritually in a different way than reading does. Also, a lot of songs come from musicals based on books, so I could still get my literature fix that way (like listening to “The Music of The Night” from Phantom of the Opera, for example).

I can’t imagine life without either! Having no books would definitely kill my studies, but having no music would kill me. After all, in music I can still appreciate language and story. I always have music in my mind, to have that replaced by silence would make my day-to-day life so empty; books take effort, I guess I would have to go without the enrichment they bring.

Since I’m already going deaf, I will have little choice. At least I can still see, with very strong eyeglasses and magnifiers.

THIS IS A HORRIBLE QUESTION! I’m going to try to be sly and say, I’d give up books and then only listen to music. I’d then buy audiobooks! :P

I’d probably give up books, but then I’d be sad for the rest of my life.
