Doug Hutchison, 51, and Courtney Stodden, 16, their union is legal, why are so many people annoyed with it?

Same reason people get pissed off if somebody smokes, or eats too many Big Macs, or wears leather shoes or uses the wrong light bulb or drives a car with a gas tank. It is Neo-Socialism. The principle that there is -
a. Always somebody smarter than you and therefore
b.They should be allowed to tell you how to live your life

How can she be the person who cannot really comprehend or understand her emotions to be in a relationship of her choosing, even with someone much older, but be fully competent and knowing what she is doing if she commits a vicious or heinous crime(s)?

I don’t think that she is fully competent and knowing what she is doing if she commits a vicious or heinous crime(s), either. For that reason she should not be tried as an adult. Not to mention, that she would not, in many countries in this world.)

The good thing is, I guess, that if ever she wants, she can file for divorce.

A marriage is quite a decision anyways and more so on that young an age. I would feel that she’d be better off in college or university. I can however see nothing wrong with her wanting to marry. I have some issues with a 51 year old that wants to marry a sixteen yeal old, though. Why not wait another couple of years, to allow her to finish her youth.

Her frontal lobes look well developed to me but seriously, I think she is too young to marry especially a 51 year old man.

I now know who Doug Hutchison and Courtney Stodden.are. Until they entered the “state of holy matrimony” I had heard of neither.
Both of their careers have benefited.

I don’t think people should care. Most of us may be saying she’s making a mistake but let her. Its her life. He’s not a pervert accordingly to the law so that’s that. Let them be.

People often seem annoyed at other people’s actions even when it doesn’t affect them in any way and they aren’t hurting anyone. Live and let live I say. Either they will stay together and be happy ot they won’t, either way, it is completely their decision.

I haven’t heard about this story, but I don’t think we should prosecute children as adults either.

She is 16, and looks late 20’s. She hasn’t come to terms with herself yet.

Usually 16, 17, 18 year-olds have not experienced enough of life to have any real idea of what it takes to make a successful marriage & frequently those that marry at this age – the marriages end in divorce. (of course, far too many marriages end in divorce anyway). I really have a problem in that the ‘groom’ in this marriage is 51 years-old; one would think that a person of this age would want a wife that was more his contemporary, someone who would have shared ideas & attitudes (however, “Love” or more commonly lust, is blind to just about everything except the physical attributes of the individuals). I don’t understand it, but it is probably not illegal, we can’t keep it from happening, but I hope that no children come from this union.

They look like they’re around the same age. If I saw them walking down the street, I wouldn’t have given them a second thought. Weird.

People are grossed out by the dating thing, so they need reason to make their purely emotional response seem rational. (these reasons may be valid, but it does not change the fact that you did not start out on those reasons, but on a purely emotional basis, with the reason just tacked on after the fact.)
And the crime thing enrages them so much that they forget all reason anyway, including ones they used to excuse stances on other things, such as the dating thing, even though it would apply in the crime thing just as well. But applying it would actually make expose their irrational emotional response for what it is. So they drop it.

Such marriages were once , not too long ago, the norm. My , how times have changed. Wonder how they feel about the “age gap”?

With a national divorce rate of about 51% they have just as good a shot as any of us at making it work. And yes, it’s nobody’s damn business anyway.

Here at 16yr she would not only be charged as an adult for crimes like that, it would be expected, any DA that didn’t go after her like that would have a hard time hanging onto his/he job.

If he lover her, and she loves him, and they want to be together and they have the working biology to start a family, if that is their pleasure, what are the issues? What part of her youth should she wait for? If she was the oldest child and one of the parents died requiring more of her, should she say ”sorry family I can’t help you more, I have the rest of my youth to finish 1st”?

@nikipedia My issue with it is that I don’t think grownups should have sex with children. If she was in a society where a group of people didn’t have the might to say “Childhood stops at this age, comply or be punished”, she would be seen a woman; biologically she is. I have never had kittens that had kittens or knew anyone with puppies that had puppies. Only after nature came in with the invisible benchmark, which varies from person to person, do they actually go from child to adult, a young adult, but an adult nonetheless, or a kitten to a cat, or puppy to a dog. Part of the problem is trying to push back biology and keep people children long after the biological ship has left the harbor.

@Season_of_Fall Thanks for the photo. I haven’t heard anything about those people before this, but after seeing that photo, I am more concerned about her strange and aged appearance than I am about their age difference or her youth.

@Zaku I was thinking the same thing. If I saw these two out in public and didn’t know about their ages, I’m not sure if I would think twice.

I think she’s with him for money and coke.

I used to do coke, I know how people on it look/act, and trust me, she’s a cokehead if I ever saw one.

That being said, I think people who are up in arms about the age difference are being hypocritical, if she was only 2 years older, no one would care about this.
