What's your favorite band and why?

Asked by LizzieBee (181points) July 16th, 2011

I’m looking for some new music to listen to.
I’ll listen to anything but:
Country
Gospel
Folk ect…

Anything else I’ll listen to. :) I especially like The Beatles, We The Kings, Skrillex, The Doors, Asking Alexandria, Orange Alablaster Mushroom, Wiz Khalifa, KiD CuDi, Kottonmouth Kings, and Bob Marley.

I’d love to hear some music from some artists I’ve never heard of before so bring it on. :)

Aerosmith.

I was first introduced to the band in Navy boot camp, of all places (1976). The recreation center there played ”Toys in the Attic” non stop, but I never payed much attention to it. It’s only remarkable in retrospect.

Fast forward to the mid 80s when a co-worker recommends Walk This Way, the Aerosmith biography. Became so enthralled with the book that I began buying the cds.

Simply stated…besides The Rolling Stones…Aerosmith ROCKS!

Welcome to Fluther!

Thanks so much :) I’ve only ever actually listened to “Love in an Elevator” by Aerosmith and have been meaning to listen to some more work of theirs. I love music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. :) Do you have a favorite album of theirs?
I never really got into The Rolling Stones for some reason, just because I didn’t grow up around it like some of my other friends.

The Corrs. Because their songs have deep meanings, inspirational, and relaxing.

Do you have a song of theirs that I could look up?

Thanks Lucille :) I like the Stevie Ray Vaughn one

@LizzieBee You can’t go wrong with their live cd, A Little South of Sanity.

Ironically enough, I wasn’t a big Stones fan either. Don’t remember why, but I started listening to their early stuff. As I accumulated more cds it became apparent that they’re primarily a blues influenced band (like Aerosmith) that crosses a variety of genres. They can play anything! Mick Jagger is arguably the best front man rock ever had, and Keith Richards is…well…Keith Richards. They’re a little “long in the tooth” these days, but I still admire them as much…even more, than Aerosmith.

I forgot to mention that. I like Summer Sunshine and What Can I Do. Sorry I can’t give you a link as I download these songs from my local site with native language.

Its okay. I’ll look them up :)

Goold Old Fashioned Lover Boy
Love the close harmony/polyphonous singing that they did in some songs, and May’s fantastic guitar and the way he plays it.
I just now learned that the intro of Bohemian Rhapsody is sang only by Mercury, where i always thought (the video clip supports my ‘mistake’) that all four members sang it.

LizzieBee's avatar

I loooove it rebbel :) thanks!

Welcome to Fluther!

A personal favorite is Fleetwood Mac. Anything from their Rumors album is great. Here is one song…The Chain. Crank up the volume Sister LizzieBee!

From the ‘80s, one is the duo Go West. One song is, We Close Our Eyes. Prepare to get up and dance.

‘60’s: Promise that you won’t kick the bucket before giving The Grateful Dead a listen. While I’m not a Dead Head like our fellow Jelly Coloma, the group is iconic American music. Here is their song, Casey Jones.

And I’ll help out @Your_Majesty as a fan of The Corrs. Here is one of their first songs: Runaway.

Edit: Gracious! @rebbel‘s recommendation of Queen…anything that they did, is pretty much worthy of listening to, and Bohemian Rhapsody is another required song.

I’m not really a huge fan of music so I don’t have a favorite but I was told by several people who love music and have what I understand to be good taste in music that the Adele’s entire album is fantastic and therefore I will recommend via 3rd party that you may enjoy it. :)

As of late, I’ve been on a huge Neil Young kick. But my current favorites are, and have been, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Shins, and Smashing Pumpkins.

I love my ABC——ABBA, The Beatles, and The Carpenters.

I also love the band The Black Keys.

Don’t really have one, in the past it’s been Depeche Mode, Madness & Tears For Fears.

The Mountain Goats

The Mountain Goats have been my favorite band in the entire world for many years. John Darnielle (the lead singer and guitar player) writes all of the lyrics entirely on his own and puts so much heart and soul into them. I can relate to their music because a lot of the songs highlight problems such as alcoholism, bad relationships, feeling lonely, and dealing with family problems from the past.

Woke Up New is one of my favorite songs because it reminds me so much of how I coped with one of my previous breakups.

Other favorites are Lion’s Teeth,Korean Bird Paintings, Love, Love, Love International Small Arms Traffic Blues, and Sax Rohmer #1.

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

@ucme I love all those three too!! Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence”, Madness’s “Our House”, and Tears For Fears “Mad World” are the best!

The Brits in the 1980s were something else. I also like China Crisis, The Pet Shop Boys, and a little known guy by the name of Nik Kershaw. All great British bands with an original melodic sound.

We seem to have similar tastes in music, so I would recommend checking out Jack Johnson. He has some love songs, but a lot of his other music is upbeat and he covers Marley sometimes. He also gives 100% of profit from his tours to local non-profits and he normally sells out everywhere he goes.

LizzieBee's avatar

Thanks to all of you for being helpful! I’ll check them all out :)

@MRSHINYSHOES & anyone else who cares to listen…... another classic eighties pop song.

AFI has been my favorite band for about 10 years. Because of them, I discovered the Cure and the Misfits, which are my second and third favorite bands. I also took up guitar and songwriting thanks to AFI.

I’m guessing from your avatar photo that you are young, so I’ll make a list of some Beatles-era stuff and newer stuff too. Hope you like!

Beady Eye (Liam Gallagher, from Oasis, his new band)

The Monkees Head album (especially “Do I Have to do This All Over Again?” and “Porpoise Song” and “Can you Dig It?” and “Circle Sky”)

Increcible Moses Lerooy (I love every song on this CD!)

Sean Lennon

Julian Lennon

The Hellecasters (especially the song “Hanging at Bob and Rita’s”) Amazing bluesy guitar playing. John Jorgenson, one of the members also has a fantastic album called Franco American Swing which you can get from his Website

Ken Oak Band (These guys have a lead cello and guitar, some of the cellos stuff reminds me of Beatles Eleanor Rigby. Their new incarnation is called Oak and Gorski

The Byrds (great jangly Beatle-esque guitars).

Neil Innes and Works in Progress

Astrud Gilberto

I know you said you don’t like country, but there are a couple of songs/artists that I think you might like because of the jangly Beatle-esque guitars and non-twangy female singers. Give these 2 a try: Mary Chapin Carpenter’s Passionate Kisses and her album Stones in the Road and Suzy Bogguss’s Hey Cinderella

Sixpence None the Richer

The La’s

Nicola Conte

The Dandy Warhols

Duffy

Insect Surfers not sure if whole abum is still available, but this is one of my favorite guitar instrumental songs of all time.

Travis

Ocean Blue

Lloyd Cole

@ucme I remember that song! Btw, are you familiar with China Crisis and Nik Kershaw? Two vastly underrated groups from the 80s. I remember I use to listen to both on cassette tapes when I was in junior high school. I’ve never been partial to American bands for some reason, always been attracted to British bands because they were usually more original.

We certainly do. :-)

@mazingerz88 Yep, I like Bronski Beat too. And their hit “Small Town Boy”.

ucme's avatar

If we’re talking classic brit pop of the eighties, we simply can’t rule out OMD or Mr. Jones.

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

@ucme Those songs bring back so many good memories. I especially like What Is Love. I remember I used to try to dress like those British new wave artists and get my hair done like Tears For Fears, wearing loose, artsy woollen coats to school and styling my hair like them. I even wanted to pierce my ear. Lol.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54IN3URGuM8

In the 1980s, there was an explosion of British talent, the New Wave as they called it, with a lot of originality. Artists nowadays are not coming out with any unique, melodic tunes. The stuff you hear out there now is actually pretty boring. Once in awhile you’ll hear a hit, but that’s far and between. :(
